No one alive will experience a better climate than today. But young people will experience a much more dangerous and chaotic world in the future, and the extent to which that happens will depend on our choices today. Trump doesn't care because he's old and a sociopath. www.ipcc.ch/report/ar6/s...

What people are saying
The discussions overwhelmingly support the consensus that global temperature increases are real, significant, and primarily caused by human activity, with examples like references to Hansen's papers, visualizations of warming stripes, and warnings about tipping points. The tone's urgency and the use of scientific sources illustrate both high interest and the desire for meaningful impact on policy and societal behavior.
Most discussions affirm the reality and severity of global temperature change driven by human activity, supporting the publication's findings and emphasizing the urgent need for action.
Posts show high engagement with the topic, quoting detailed data, scientific studies, and visualizations like warming stripes, indicating strong curiosity and concern.
Many discussions delve into scientific explanations, cite authoritative sources, and analyze specific climate data, demonstrating deep engagement with the science and implications.
The overall tone emphasizes the critical implications of the data, calling for policy change, moral obligations, and highlighting the potential for irreversible damage, underscoring high-impact awareness.
Abstract in brief
- Global surface temperatures have increased by about 0.2°C per decade over the past 30 years, aligning with earlier climate model predictions, and warming has been more pronounced in the Western Equatorial Pacific, potentially influencing the frequency of strong El Niño events.
- Paleoclimate data indicates that the Western Pacific is now as warm as during the Holocene maximum and nearly as warm as it has been in the past million years, suggesting today's climate is at a historical high.
- A global temperature rise exceeding 1°C above 2000 levels is considered dangerous, likely leading to significant sea level rise and widespread species extinction.]

Most liked on X and BlueskyYou realise "climate change is inevitable" is absurd when you reword it as "fossil fuels are inevitable" or "Exxon is inevitable" or "Rishi Sunak is inevitable" It's a threat built of causes which we can identify and fight. Fatalism is pro-fossil. Be pro-fighting, instead ✊
Whenever one of my posts gains traction outside the usual climate-interested circle, it’s so fascinating to read the comments. Many are seeing a graph of CO₂ or global temperature change for the first time. It is always obvious that there is a huge desire for more of this real-time climate data!

Congress is trying to kill new investment in solar and wind power. Meanwhile global warming is accelerating. This is a death wish, on a national and global scale.
Good news: climate policies implemented since the 2015 Paris Agreement have reduced projected global temperature change by at least 1C so far. Bad news: it’s still not enough to avoid widespread dangerous impacts; and as this summer shows, we’ve been systematically underestimating the extremes.

@JayDi08396708 @Race2Extinct That's kind of exactly the problem with the climate alarmists though. @liquidingretion @CyfraithEcocide @ryankatzrosene @Tairmuir Maybe you should try it some time, since so far all you've done is parrot cherry-picked data that's totally irrelevant to global temperature change over the relevant time periods, and make blatantly wrong statements about where in the interglacial cycle we really are. @EdBohman @Race2Extinct And no, it's not that complicated. The global temperature change is a result of the forcing. Before we started emitting GHGs, the orbital forcing was causing Earth to very slowly cool; this would still be happening if we hadn't sent global temperatures skyrocketing with our GHGs.

Yes, climate changes. Ice ages and all that. It is not supposed to change by a global average of +3°C in the space of 200 years. The cycles of global temperature change that we have record of are WAY, WAY longer than that. We are in the same cycle as the last global ice age some 12-16000 years ago.
The land warms about twice as fast as the ocean, but once you rescale for that basic difference, the patterns have usually been quite similar. But not during the early 20th century, when the ocean measurements were much cooler than land observations would expect. 4/

Or that the average temperature going up 1-2% would mean hurricanes and tornadoes would get 1-2% stronger and the bad things, if they happened, would happen equally gradually. I’ve always noticed a disconnect there, just in understanding what average global temperature change means.
I think it's a positive shift, since it names it as a crisis rather than something that sounds vaguely problematic or even pleasant. Plus, the climate crises are a lot more widespread than global temperature change alone.

With respect to @hausfath.bsky.social @glenpeters.bsky.social and others, the problem with the article is not the temperature number they end up at, but the fundamental failure in trying to slam down a single, predetermined destiny onto the table, rather than presenting this as the result of choices

Physical predictions out to year 2100, such as global temperature change, are useful for mitigation decisions because they explicitly depend on scenario assumptions. But if we try to predict societal changes in 2100 the exogenous assumptions become endogenous and get buried deep within such studies.
