While many posts emphasize the relevance of working memory to education, mental health, and AI, the perceived societal or technological impact remains moderate, focused more on personal and scientific levels.
Abstract in brief
Working memory is a brain system that temporarily stores and processes information needed for complex tasks like language understanding, learning, and reasoning.
It involves three main parts: the central executive, which controls attention and manages other components; the visuospatial sketch pad, which handles visual images; and the phonological loop, which stores and rehearses speech-based information.
This system is essential for cognitive functions and can be affected by conditions like Alzheimer's disease, especially in its ability to control attention and process information effectively.
When a coach says that scenario is "too hard" it's not a judgment of your skill. It means you haven't automated the required fundamental skills yet. The task demands overload your current working memory leading to frustration and poor aiming habits.

Old, and imho not very good, models of programming ability were pretty strongly informed by the cognitive science backgrounds of the few people who worked on them. E.g., the argument that a strong working memory and trained better 'chunking' might lead to large indiv diffs in programming
One of the most important features of fully guided explicit instruction is how intentionally it manages students’ working memory. It enables me to optimize intrinsic load, reduce extraneous load, and create the conditions where students can effectively think, learn, and remember.

Just realised someone is soft blocking me every time I follow them. This sort of thing doesn't happen when you have a working memory
Memory issues are a fairly common disability, including long term, short term, and working memory. Also, some people take longer to type information in or get distracted away and have to come back after a few minutes, making it more likely to forget. Best practices include basic accessibility.
@HenryV23245 @Sneak0o it's low IQ to equate low IQ with the lack knowledge instead of pattern recognition or maybe working memory
Everybody doesn't know what you know
Also I already knew that but I saw this clip after I read this tweet and it just fits ironically, inaccurate or not
@euboid @cursor_ai @NotionHQ @claudeai Yeah, this mostly comes down to memory and learning limits.
Today’s agents don’t really work the way humans do, they just operate on whatever fits in their current context. Once that’s gone, it’s gone. No real long-term working memory, no learning while the task is happening.
@cbokhove @warmMagnet @LizStepan @AmmarMerhbi If kids aren’t fluent in math facts, factoring polynomials will overload their working memory. Nothing post hoc about that.

The dlPFC is implicated in the planning of action sequences, mental representation of consequences, and working memory manipulation, with neuroimaging
Fixing these can sometimes result in an immediate "bump" in cognitive performance.

I'm not aware of it at all, they just put on the report that low working memory "relative to overall ability" is "suggestive of dyslexia type difficulties". I'll do some reading thanks.
Working memory might be something you’re stuck with, it’s ADHD and even full strength meds don’t seem to help (one of my besties is on full strength, and she spent all day Monday in the passport office because she’d forgotten to renew it).
You mentioned dyslexias. Are you aware of any that you have

@SouthPawInc @SeekingAnon IQ is mostly stable in adults due to genetics, but studies show modest gains (5-15 points) via prolonged cognitive training like creative problem-solving or working memory exercises. Early diet, healthcare, and education can boost it more effectively in childhood. Neuralink aims
As someone who is the opposite (IQ tests always make me look more intelligent than I am), I would say it’s nothing to worry about.
I take it your working score is lower because of your working memory? Feels like an ADHD brain is always going to score lower on those.
@LedZECelin @KarhuAndres @Tradermayne I tested as a genius as a kid. Started smoking at 18, more stuff shortly after. @LizStepan @AmmarMerhbi Great Q, Liz, but there's no easy answer. CLT began as legit cog science and took off as the idea of working memory began to expand in the 1970s. My post talks about philosophy of science, how we know science ought to operate.

People are mad at this, but it's clear the questions are rhetorical if you are an adult with a working memory of your childhood pre-ipad. Which makes the "do you have kids, numbnuts?" posts silly because, again, if you have that memory you know how you were parented! https://t.co/PS9Bv3Gm6M

You're just trying to repackage the "atheism smart" propaganda.
IQ is not "general smartness", it covers things like thinking speed and working memory, it doesn't cover things like wisdom, insight or moral reasoning.
It's not that it's not binary, it's that strings don't eval or deserialize into working memory. Strings might contain SQL injection, or special HTML characters, but to JavaScript they are inert.

In one sense, the human brain is very constrained. For example, the fragmentation of individual objects in conscious working memory, that prevents even top Chess players to memorize chess positions. Their brains can only memorize positions that look like typical chess games.
Got to work (stage) behind the bar of my favorite cafe in Portland for about 2 hours this afternoon.
Was a lot of fun, but I forgot how taxing this kind of work is on working memory.
It's what I did for each class when I was in high school too, and since I restarted in 2020 I feel so much better. It gives me a place to write and find stuff where I won't panic and worry I'll forget it, so I don't have to carry it all in working memory. Its physicality and finite space is a plus.

I think it implies a lot, actually. Being able to do mathematical computations quickly and correctly is a specific type of cognitive process that is incredibly working-memory demanding. So it's an indirect read out of: *not being stressed/distracted *being able to focus *not being sleepy/hungry
It is extremely hard to explain executive dysfunction to someone who doesn't experience it. Getting myself from "thought" to "action" can be sooooo hard sometimes and it's not like I dont want to do or don't know the thing is important..I can't get the "get up" signals to fire properly!
Very happy to say my sleep deprivation study from my PhD has been published in the Journal of Sleep Research. Specifically, we found that sleep deprivation may impair the inhibition of irrelevant memories from working memory, which is reversed after recovery sleep.

Not sure why the defensive tone. Stylized fact is a concept (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stylize...) noting generalizations that don't exactly hew to the caveats in data. Not disputing that working memory is limited. The precision of 7 +/- 2 is where I'm interested. Also curious on how it's under stress?
Conventional cognitive science suggests our working memory is limited to holding seven pieces of info at any one time, "plus or minus two." But! We can rearrange and reduce info into mental chunks, which is perhaps why phone numbers are split into smaller groups.

gotcha, yeah I had the sense that it was likely oversimplified. I found it helpful to have a sort of framework explaining why certain tasks seemed particularly hard for me (poor working memory), although I've evolved my thinking about it just based on experience
So few questions asked about what might be a general trend across pretty much all forms of complex work (e.g., working memory could also matter for managing a restaurant), and instead the assumption that finding in a population of programmers = "unique to programming"
Old, and imho not very good, models of programming ability were pretty strongly informed by the cognitive science backgrounds of the few people who worked on them. E.g., the argument that a strong working memory and trained better 'chunking' might lead to large indiv diffs in programming
But that the average students were largely, well, average. So, I definitely agree that systemically, education is not giving students necessary skills to succeed (working memory came up a lot).
Also reminded me of discussion around three-cueing.
