Abstract in brief

  • The study explores the structural differences between straight and curly human hair at molecular, cellular, and macroscopic levels, revealing that the curl pattern is related to the organization of macrofibrils and the degree of rotational movement in the hair cross-section.
  • Curly hair exhibits unique features such as retrocurvature in follicles, asymmetrical proliferation above the Auber line, and elliptical, asymmetrical cortex with keratin accumulation on the concave side, which contributes to the curly shape.
  • The research suggests that hair acts like a "shape memory" material, where intrinsic structural asymmetries and differentiation patterns in the cortex influence the curl pattern, providing new insights into the biophysical basis of hair morphology.]
