Abstract in brief

  • Sunscreens contribute to coral bleaching by promoting viral infections in symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae), which leads to the release of these algae and damages coral health.
  • Experiments in various tropical oceans showed that even very small amounts of sunscreen can cause rapid and complete coral bleaching, primarily due to organic UV filters triggering viral cycles within the algae.
  • The findings suggest that sunscreen pollution, especially in heavily visited areas, may significantly influence coral bleaching events alongside other factors like temperature and pollution.]
