Abstract Synopsis
- This study investigated how long-term use of bright light and melatonin might help slow cognitive decline, improve mood, and enhance sleep in elderly residents with dementia in care homes, finding that light treatment modestly benefited mental function and mood, while melatonin improved sleep but had some potential negative effects.
- In the trial, participants were randomly assigned to different combinations of bright or dim light and melatonin or placebo, and their cognitive, emotional, and sleep-related symptoms were regularly assessed over an average of about 1.5 years.
- Results showed that bright light slightly slowed cognitive deterioration and depressed moods, while melatonin helped reduce sleep onset time and increased sleep duration, though it also had some adverse impacts on other health scores.
