The use of vivid descriptions and sharing of images indicates both fascination and a desire for improved identification efforts.

AgreementModerate agreement

Most discussions acknowledge the seriousness and relevance of diagnosing visceral pentastomiasis, supporting the publication’s significance.

InterestHigh interest

Posts show high curiosity, with many referencing the unusual nature of these parasites and sharing images and facts.

EngagementModerate engagement

Comments include specific details about the parasites’ appearance and the disease, indicating active participation.

ImpactModerate impact

The discussions highlight the importance of accurate diagnosis and awareness, suggesting a modest but meaningful influence on understanding this rare disease.

Abstract in brief

  • Visceral pentastomiasis in humans is caused by the larval stages of tongue worms such as Linguatula serrata and Armillifer species, mainly reported from Africa, Malaysia, and the Middle East.
  • In Europe and North America, cases are rare and often mistaken for cancer, leading to delayed diagnosis, with the disease sometimes being found during autopsies.
  • Since symptoms vary and serological tests are limited, diagnosis primarily depends on histopathological examination, and the disease's risk factors and epidemiology are discussed in this symposium.

Sorry that pentastomids are gross AND CAN INFECT YOU (if you eat uncooked snake, for example). But if you look at Armillifer outside of the host, it looks like a crinkle cut french fry, as said by @jimmybernot.bsky.social #InsertAnInvert2024

#Pentastomiasis is an unusual zoonosis caused by larval stages of pentastomes (“tongue worms”). Species infecting humans belong to Linguatulidae, Armilliferidae, & Porocephalidae. >90% of human cases caused by two species, L. serrata and A. armillatus. https://t.co/JYaieJDQtD
