Abstract in brief
- Carbonated beverages activate taste neurons through somatosensory and chemosensory responses, but the exact cellular mechanisms were unclear.
- Researchers identified that sour-sensing taste cells serve as the primary sensors for carbonation, with carbonic anhydrase 4 acting as the key CO2 receptor.
- These findings explain how the taste of carbonation is perceived at a cellular level and highlight the role of specific taste cells in detecting CO2 in the mouth.]

Most liked on X and BlueskyWhenever I see a patient on acetazolamide, I remember that they can’t taste the fizz in sodas. Acetazolamide may alter or eliminate the taste of carbonation. Every soda pop, beer, or champagne is flat to them. What a cruel world. https://t.co/aJUK0iui1G
@hodgetwins Seems fake. They deliberately ignore the cap? And can't seem to figure out that you have to tip it up to drink? That's not a difficult concept. If you gather water of any kind, you would know how to drink liquid. Also they don't seem to be shocked at the taste of carbonation?
@OldMemeClown I think the taste of carbonation is the best part actually. https://t.co/xFpX9YjX2j
@IrinaBezsonova @PDBeurope @buildmodels For SPARKLE, I suggest carbonic anhydrase because it turns out that the sparkling feeling when you drink a fizzy drink with CO2 is dependent on sour-sensing cells that depend on this enzyme

@monk13384 FOR REALLL everyone in my family enjoys carbonated beverages and I just can't stand the taste of carbonation and give me looks whenever I say no to a soda
I don't like the taste of carbonation at allllll and like Seltzers don't hide that taste like sodas do

@leather_butch @AndyPeacock999 @pbAstronaut @JennyENicholson Yes but then you have to taste sparking water. (I drink a lot of still water I just don’t like the taste of carbonation with no flavor)

@GourlaySyd @tmprowell @CDCgov I think you may be confused with the taste of carbonation (CO2).
@Jayecane Sometimes I think the difference is the taste of carbonation and sugar
STRAWBERRY Smooth and delicious. Since it was mellow, the taste of carbonation was a bit apparent, but it wasn't a huge issue. 8/10

@DelysidOfficial I carry mio everywhere, every type of water tastes like I’m licking a penny’s. I also hate the taste of carbonation and gag if something is carbonated . Idk maybe it’s some kind of mutation.
@JenMN72 Same. Well I can drink water but I do like the taste of carbonation once an awhile.
@racketyfence losing carbonation makes them taste better imo, both bc I hate the taste of carbonation and once it’s flat you taste the actual drink. Some drinks are better flat than others so it really just depends lol
@Caroline_Bartma Works for champagne too

I attribute a lot of my good health to the fact that I have not had more than the equivalent of One Soda in my entire life. Luckily, God didn’t let me enjoy the taste. In fact, he really made me despise the taste of carbonation. Thankful
I love the taste of carbonation
@MattWalshBlog I disagree here @MattWalshBlog . Sparkling water is disgusting, I HATE the the taste of carbonation.
@OldMemeClown I think the taste of carbonation is the best part actually. https://t.co/xFpX9YjX2j

@Alora_Anophis Everytime I see any discourse I have the urge to drink…but I can’t because USA and also I hate the taste of carbonation
@snow_derg Same! I've cut out all sugary soft drinks and just drink carbonated water. Lost so much weight from doing that too! I just love the taste of carbonation haha
@_Scorpihoe yeah i legit don’t drink soda never have
@CrankyOtter Technically fermentation and carbonating water are both carbonation in a scientific sense but one of those tastes really bad and one is fine when flat, which, for sure there is a thing where I prefer the taste of carbonation levels that are almost impossible without fermentation.
@CosmonautMarcus I hate the taste of carbonation, so my body protects me against them.
@pavsmith carbonisation = acid = sour taste receptor activation https://t.co/waa8WynX8V (in rodents, but most likely similar in humans too)
To give a silly & trivial example of category three, if one does not prefer the taste of carbonation, they can safely remain agnostic regarding the health effects of soda (as so far as it concerns themselves), because they would not drink it, regardless of health concerns.
@Elles8belles @BarryJDickson @janelia @GuignardLab Not a member of that working group. I was just a young grad student presenting a poster about the taste of carbonation in flies. I miss those snake-like taste peg neurons! https://t.co/RH9rpe931k
@PenisShitFac The taste of normal sparkling water is gross. But the ice sparkling water is good due to it having flavor and not the taste of carbonation
I just realized that the reason soda tastes so weird when it's flat is because the whole package hinges on the TASTE of carbonation. They had to orchestrate the entire taste of their beverage around a weird gas that they all add. Is that weird?
Guess who forgot topamax takes away the taste of carbonation in pop

@lotushoney_ I've never heard anyone say they were craving the taste of carbonation
@dumpstxrfire Anyone have options that don't have sparkling water? I don't drink and I despise the taste of carbonation, but I like feeling like I'm drinking something fancy
@amandaoee_ i enjoy the taste of carbonation. that little metal that comes through https://t.co/vxBvJ4GmWo
after not drinking soda for over six years, having my first bottle out of necessity because the vending machines were sold out of water, i can’t say i miss it. it’s hard to enjoy the taste of carbonation burning my throat lmao

@amandazubillaga Oh wow, I didn't realise some meds altered the taste of carbonation. I just remember tasting nothing, or a persistent bitter taste. I was so relieved to come off them (I was on them longer than planned anyway).

@AdamPugh Excuse you, as a deviant who think anything carbonated but not flavored enough to mask the taste of carbonation is undrinkable, I object.
Does carbonation taste like anything? Yes, it does: SOUR! @alexismadrigal fills us in on the science behind the taste of carbonation. @WIRED https://t.co/j8BsH9Ovu8
@mmmadcccow @TamarHaspel Me too (I say this as someone who hates the taste of carbonation). It's this belief that being thin just magically happens if you have the right tastes and background and other markers of social class. You either have the genes for self control or you're a degenerate.
So if carbonic anhydrase is inhibited, then the channel will not have protons to allow the taste of carbonation on our taste buds (Frost and McKeena 175).
@petersuderman I sometimes fuck with sparkling Dasani but only b/c Swin's mom gives it to us (somehow just the name Dasani almost takes the taste of carbonation away)
@gnothiseauton18 If I could get past the taste of carbonation
Wow the taste of carbonation first thing in the morning really changes a person
