Abstract in brief
- Ipilimumab, a drug that enhances the immune response against melanoma, was tested in a phase 3 study to see how it works alone or with a gp100 vaccine compared to gp100 alone in patients with advanced melanoma.
- Among 676 patients, those receiving ipilimumab (with or without gp100) had better median overall survival (10.0-10.1 months) than those receiving gp100 alone (6.4 months), indicating a significant improvement in survival outcomes.
- However, treatment with ipilimumab was associated with higher rates of severe immune-related side effects (10-15%) compared to gp100 alone (3%), highlighting the potential risks of the therapy despite its benefits.
