Abstract in brief
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common cause of recurrent vertigo triggered by head movements, caused by abnormal stimulation of the semicircular canals due to freefloating otoliths or those adhered to the cupula.
Symptoms such as vertigo and nystagmus occur when the head is positioned so that the affected canal aligns with gravity, with rapid symptom resolution typically achieved through canalith repositioning maneuvers.
The severity and duration of BPPV symptoms vary depending on the affected canal and debris location, but spontaneous recovery is possible, and repositioning procedures often offer immediate relief.

Why:
It is a positional diagnostic test for vertigo
Used to confirm benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), especially posterior semicircular canal involvement
Elicits vertigo with characteristic nystagmus when positive

@TheStingisBack Changes in flight pressure can cause issues with the eustacian tubes. Try the Valsalva maneuver.
Or it could be Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). Inner ear calcium crystals get displaced to your semi-circle canals. Try the Epley maneuver to guide them back.
At some point in the last week+, I triggered my BPPV* despite my best efforts which sucks, but it's more annoying than anything. I hate that that's just my life though. I used to be able to roll over in bed without planning -_-

it’s basically a condition in which otoliths become stuck in the semicircular canal causing brief episodes of vertigo when, for example, the person gets up from the bed or changes the position of his head. (1/2)
@AB_drmd Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo “BPPV”
A condition characterised by vertigo, nystagmus, and vomiting sometimes.
Up to 90% of cases treated by Epley maneuver, others would need pharmaceutical treatment with anti-vertigo pills in addition.
The article says they're optimistic he'll recover. Hopefully this isn't a long term thing like Menieres or Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

Sometimes I think my BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is long gone, then I lay down too long with my head at a bad angle. This causes such bad vertigo & nystagmus that I can barely get out of bed let alone go from one room to another.

Vertigo is horrible, I hope it eases soon. I get BPPV. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Increasing occurrences with increasing age. An unpleasant nuisance requiring a specific manoeuvre to fix it and sometimes medication for the nausea. Fortunately I can usually do the manoeuvre by myself now.

So tomorrow I start physical therapy for my newly diagnosed Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). I don't get dizzy looking down from heights, I get dizzy looking up. I never knew that until a few yrs ago. At The Empire State Building, I looked up and I thought I was gonna pass out. Wow.
they want her to do a ct on monday, just to be sure, but they gave her a tentative benign paroxysmal positional vertigo diagnosis and prescribed something, so hopefully that helps and the scan is all good. there’s also apparently physical therapy for this??? but she’s resting for now.
so a fun thing I'm learning is that my issues with Meniere's and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) (NEITHER OF WHICH I RECOMEND HAVING TO EVEN MY ENEMIES) are probably at the root of why I can muscularly do some things and physically not be able to. Like split squats or lunges?...
I've been getting increasingly dizzy & clumsy for 3 months now. At the appt to address it, she told me I have benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, but I don't HAVE vertigo, it isn't related to changing positions of my head, & the attacks last hours, not minutes, so that's another shrug medically.
Ask your neurologist for a vestibular therapist referral.
Also if you can, see an otologist just to make sure nothing else is happening like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or Mal Debarquement Syndrome (just as you describe about boats).

I'm really hoping this isn't Ménière's disease (have tinnitus and pressure feeling in ear) and is just some form of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, because... yeah no, vertigo genuinely sucks.

I have BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), a condition in which the calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear, which are used to detect movement, become loose. You can treat it with exercises where you lie down, turn your head about 30 degrees to the side, and sit up abruptly.
