Abstract Synopsis

  • Human activities like whaling and industrial fishing have drastically reduced large marine animals such as whales, which has negatively impacted the ocean's ability to store carbon.
  • Large baleen whales used to store a significant amount of carbon, but their populations have decreased, leading to a loss of carbon storage capacity, although some smaller species have partially compensated for this loss.
  • Rebuilding whale populations could enhance the ocean's carbon sequestration by increasing the amount of carbon exported to deep sea environments, making whale conservation an effective strategy for carbon management comparable to other methods like ocean iron fertilization.]
