Abstract Synopsis

  • Briefer naps (around 5-15 minutes) can quickly improve alertness and cognitive function, but their effects last only a few hours.
  • Longer naps (about 30 minutes) may cause temporary sleep inertia but offer longer-lasting cognitive benefits, especially when taken in the early afternoon or after extended wakefulness.
  • New research suggests that short naps with minimal slow-wave sleep may boost alertness through a process called Process O, which involves rapid dissipation of sleep inhibition, rather than traditional homeostatic sleep mechanisms.
