Abstract Synopsis
- Exercise training, specifically aerobic exercise, can increase the size of the hippocampus in older adults and improve memory, especially spatial memory.
- The study showed that aerobic exercise could reverse age-related hippocampal volume loss by 1 to 2 years and these changes are linked to higher levels of BDNF, a protein that promotes brain cell growth.
- The findings suggest that regular physical activity helps protect against hippocampal shrinkage in late adulthood, though it does not seem to affect other brain areas like the caudate nucleus and thalamus.]
