Abstract in brief
This review discusses the ongoing debates about the safety and effectiveness of sunscreens, including their role in preventing skin cancer, their impact on vitamin D production, and concerns about ingredients like oxybenzone, retinyl palmitate, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide.
Evidence shows that sunscreens effectively protect against squamous cell carcinoma, do not cause significant vitamin D deficiency in practice, and have not been proven to harm human health significantly.
Despite their benefits, the review emphasizes the need for future sunscreen formulations to provide better protection and for continuous safety monitoring as sunscreen use increases globally.]
The more I look at actual science, the more I feel like I'm losing my mind. The other day I tried to look into the link between sunscreen and melanoma risk. Should be a slam dunk, right? Wait what? https://t.co/agHqCXLlyV https://t.co/9qG0dIwQka

#Sunscreen does not cause cancer and @FDA has not found evidence that its active ingredients increase the risks of any type of cancer. Check out this review from 2011 https://t.co/NYLsdPPL8s that looked at studies dating back to the 1960s. No negative health effects were found https://t.co/G1b9RAu8qm
@DanielWhitby @skirkwb @TheCTPA Yes, it’s one that’s used commonly in US. Although it is getting a bad reputation here. This addresses some of the issues https://t.co/ZNlt3nhKZ8

@GarettJones Sunscreens certainly have weakest, most conflicted data. Eg they clearly lower incidence of squamous/basal cancers, but melanoma data much weaker. And some chance increases other cancers in kids (many kid cancers are more common in more polar latitudes) Eg https://t.co/feAwYfcg1A
I present, a critical review of the controversy over sunscreen (reviews look at multiple studies and are a great way to summarize and assess current evidence):
