Rainforests Beyond the Tropics: Understanding Biodiversity
Many of us are familiar with rainforests as the pinnacle of life on Earth. However, certain areas in temperate latitudes can also host rainforests, challenging our assumptions. This video explores these unexpected locations and highlights the importance of biodiversity research.
Role of Amateurs in Discovering New Species and Biodiversity Insights
Most new species are discovered by amateurs because nonprofessionals now often are better suited to discovery efforts. This highlights the vital role of amateur taxonomists in biodiversity research and the importance of supporting their contributions.
The Role of Photosynthesis in Ecosystem Health
This video explores the critical process of photosynthesis and its vital role in maintaining ecosystem health. It discusses how photosynthesis influences carbon cycles, supports food chains, and contributes to biodiversity, emphasizing the importance of this process in environmental sustainability.
Mass Extinctions and Biodiversity Evolution through Geological Eras
The five mass extinctions in Earth's history have shaped evolution through geological eras, including the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic. Currently, species may be facing a sixth mass extinction, with reports stating that 99.9% of species that ever lived are now extinct.
Evolution of Ant Agriculture and Leaf Cutter Symbiosis
This video explores the evolution of ant agriculture, a unique symbiosis found in specific animal groups. Focusing on the leafcutter ants, it discusses how they developed their single-fungal cultivation system 8-12 million years ago, becoming key herbivores in tropical ecosystems.
Phytoplankton: The Vital Role of Microalgae in Biodiversity
This short film discusses the impact of human activities on Phytoplankton, a crucial single-celled organism. These microalgae support global life forms through food webs and oxygen production. Explore the urgent need for research to understand and preserve Earth's biodiversity.
Genetics, Environmental Policy, and Political Influence Analysis
Evolution Hour 142 explores genetic research, early genetics work, and the application of Source Methods to public science policy, including controversies surrounding industry influence on chemical risk assessments.
Genetics and Policy: Scientific Insights and Political Influences in Public Health
Evolution Hour 142 discusses genetic research citations, Mendel's peas, and historic sex chromosome work. It also examines how political lobbying, particularly by industry groups, influences public science policy on chemical risks, highlighting conflicts between science and politics.
The Evolution of Human Intelligence: A Unique Journey
This video explores the evolutionary journey of human intelligence, including the caloric cost of big brains and the social dynamics of ancient tribes. It highlights the stark differences between our cognition and that of other species, emphasizing the unique aspects of human thought.

@AngelBorjaYerro (Twitter)Could we know the number of #species on Earth? This prediction says 8.7 million species globally, of which 2.2 million #marine. This means 86% of the species on Earth & 91% in #ocean still await description, #taxonomists and #genetists needed! https://t.co/YTwiVXTH3E https://t.co/W1upBBU5QL

Abstract Synopsis
- The total estimated number of eukaryotic species on Earth is around 8.7 million, with approximately 2.2 million of those being marine species.
- Despite over 1.2 million species already catalogued, around 86% of species on land and 91% in the ocean remain undescribed.
- There is a pressing need for further exploration and taxonomic research to fill this significant gap in our understanding of global biodiversity.
