Abstract Synopsis

  • In this study, researchers investigated how different doses of endotoxin (LPS), which induces inflammation, affect various neurobehavioral functions in healthy men, showing dose-related physiological and mood changes.
  • The results revealed that while inflammation elevated cytokine levels, temperature, and anxiety, it did not impair working memory accuracy but sped up reaction times at higher doses; however, lower doses of LPS impaired long-term memory for emotional images.
  • The findings suggest that acute systemic inflammation triggers two opposing mechanisms: one that may enhance certain cognitive functions temporarily and another that impairs more complex, emotional memory processes.
