Yesterday I had my first catch up of the season with my favourite tuatara. For the 12 years that I’ve been keeping tabs on the toutouwai at Zealandia he has been chilling in this exact spot on warm days. A great reminder to slow down and enjoy the rare sunny spring weather!

Has no one told them they are an at-risk species??? Speaking of which, did you know that there is a tuatara tick. It only lives on tuatara, so it is also an at-risk relict species?
Basically... After mating, the female incubates the eggs internally for a few months, and then lays them in a hole, buries them, and that's her maternal duties done. They hatch months later. Tuatara feed on pretty much anything smaller than themselves. Baby tuatara are smaller than adult tuatara.
You probably don't want to know about tuatara then...
I shall take your word for it! Here's a photo of a tuatara that I took. They are the opposite of all the other species discussed in this thread - they are their own separate order of reptiles, distinct from the other three (snakes & lizards; crocs, & alligators et al; and turtles & tortoises).

Tuatara has been an obscure favorite of mine since the KB issue. It was my favorite issue of his run. I'm glad somebody gave her a second appearance, even if it took 25 years.
There are a lot of gaps in my Iron Man reading, and I assumed that when Ackerman used Tuatara in issue 2 of the most recent IM series (November 2024) that she was a deep cut, but I'd forgotten that she first appeared during issue 6 of Busiek's Heroes Return run (July 1998)

How did you know I have to do my assignment on Tuatara today? 1) they are, but they are the only ones to have a classification all to themselves. Crocs, gators, cayman are one branch, snakes and lizards are all in one together, and I forget the fourth grouping, maybe frogs and toads?

Artists always draw these basal Rhynchocephalia like skinny tuatara, even though those spines seem to have evolved for sexual display in modern Sphenodon and probably weren’t present in any ancestors.
