Abstract Synopsis

  • Dung beetles use the Milky Way and other celestial cues like the sun and moon to orient themselves and roll their dung balls in straight lines, especially when other cues are absent.
  • They can accurately navigate under starry skies, even on moonless nights, but lose this ability under overcast conditions, suggesting they rely on stars for orientation.
  • This study is significant because it is the first to definitively show that insects, specifically dung beetles, utilize the starry sky and the Milky Way for navigation, expanding our understanding of animal behavior and orientation mechanisms.]
