Abstract in brief
The study focuses on a well-preserved giant skull of a pliosaurid from the Late Jurassic period in England, leading to the identification of a new species called Pliosaurus kevani, and two other new species, Pliosaurus carpenteri and Pliosaurus westburyensis.
Pliosaurus was a widespread and long-lived genus of marine predators with large skulls and body sizes, exhibiting less variation in shape and ecology compared to earlier and later pliosaurid groups, and showed a trend of decreasing jaw length over time possibly related to changes in prey preferences.
Over time, the maximum size of these marine reptiles increased from the Early Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous, but some size reduction occurred before their extinction in the early Late Cretaceous, with skull lengths reaching up to about 2.36 meters.
