What people are saying
The discussions demonstrate a strong interest in both the psychological aspects and practical consequences of misestimating large numbers, exemplified by mentions of research studies, algorithms, and real-world observations. The tone often combines curiosity with analytical insights, emphasizing the significance of these findings in areas like crowd estimation, science communication, and decision-making.
Most discussions acknowledge that humans are poor at estimating large numbers, aligning with the article’s findings and established psychological research.
Many posts show high interest, referencing studies, advanced algorithms, and practical implications, indicating fascination with the topic's relevance.
Posts range from sharing personal experiences to discussing technical methods, reflecting moderate depth of engagement with some technical details and examples.
The discussions highlight the importance of understanding how humans perceive large numbers, which can influence policy, science communication, and education—implying a noticeable impact.
Abstract in brief
- The study examines how adult Americans estimate and evaluate very large numbers, revealing that many tend to place these numbers on a number line as if the words "thousand, million, billion" are part of a uniformly spaced list, rather than following the expected logarithmic pattern.
- Participants who estimated linearly often viewed large numbers as evenly spaced, which influenced their political judgments, making them more optimistic about ineffective strategies.
- These findings suggest that the way large number words are presented can heavily impact understanding and decision-making, highlighting the importance for lawmakers and scientists to communicate number information clearly and effectively.]

@Lydonj5 The human brain is notoriously bad at estimating large numbers of anything. That's why you have to use calculations of what is actually physically possible. Stephen thought 20 roads of his protest would be the entire UK population.

@TonyHomewood @SausageSpice @realninawysocka @TRobinsonNewEra Humans are very bad at estimating large numbers by eye, which is why police use mathematical models and specialised drones to count crowd sizes, rather than watching a twenty second clip taken from hundreds of meters away
@TrueBritVoice @floboflo Humans are notoriously bad at estimating large numbers from just glancing at a situation. You need to do the calculations (or get an AI to do it for you, asking it to count numbers in the actual video in the thread & asking it to explain the steps in its reasoning.)
@BackTo70179 @JimCognito2016 The maths says otherwise. How many do you think it was? Do you have. Any actual proof (other than, “it looks like more”- it’s well established that humans aren’t good at estimating large numbers)
@ToonDazza Yes, if that's 0.75km long and 20m wide it would be around 50k people given 3 people per metre square. Humans are very bad at estimating large numbers/quantities/volunes beyond a certain point.
@Sutton1Mr Wee scientific fact for you pal: Humans are notoriously AWFUL at estimating large numbers. It's due to something called "Nonlinear Perception of Quantities", for large groups humans perceive numbers logarithmically. That means the difference between 10 and 20 feels much bigger...
@RealCFrampton People are generally really poor at estimating large numbers.
Also I mean people are just terrible at estimating large numbers. I mean could you tell the difference between 100,000 and 200,000 people?
@peterrhague It’s really difficult estimating large numbers of people, particularly when you have as low an IQ as most Reform supporters.
@WharfRat7690 @Jon_Williamso @TRobinsonNewEra I saw the footage. Crowd seems in line with some of the larger no kings rallies, like Philly, which had around 100,000 attendees… Humans are really bad at estimating large numbers (anything over a few hundred.) @MattZeitlin extremely true; part of why so many americans with “have $500k net worth soonish” on their to do list thought railing against “millionaires and billionaires” was about them. never evolved to count this high and maintain an intuitive grasp on things. https://t.co/WQRbWBvcem https://t.co/5xhPuvxPOL

@yaxu Does it make you good at estimating large numbers, e.g. how many sweeties on a plate?
Not only just ignorance, but humans overall are really terrible at understanding or estimating large numbers and percentages.
Humans tap out on high numbers very quickly. There was a protest march in NZ recently and the estimate of the number of people is anywhere from 15 thousand to 85 thousand. This is being presented as evidence of malfeasance, but it’s mostly just people being very bad at estimating large numbers.
Humans have never been good at estimating large numbers.

@FactualPhilemon @TheOmniLiberal Fair enough. @FOX26Houston Estimating large numbers can be hard, but here’s a helpful way to do it: Count the number of fish in a square foot area (or better, a square yard), then multiply by how many square feet/yards of fish. You’ll find there are probably close to a hundred in a single square yard.
Also fascinating that one of the studies cited in the piece (where people estimated that a million was halfway between a thousand and a billion for reference https://t.co/Z1dRWjNR2z) indicates that humans conceive of big numbers logarithmically as a way to cope with such scale
@alex_renard13 @EdwardVersaii That number honesty feels more accurate from a boots-on-the-ground perspective. Research shows that people are notoriously bad at estimating large numbers. This is likely even more true when you are invested in those numbers

Over a third of people in this experiment think that if you put a thousand and a billion on a line... a million would be half way between the two... how well understood is the concept of a trillion?... some science: https://t.co/DyO6Px8rm1
All of us have a difficult time understanding the large numbers being discussed in the news right now. (See: https://t.co/0A9Ds7sLeU for some science about that.) Here's a helpful graphic for income amount comparison: https://t.co/wTHLjQfj1F
@MarkSmi58604302 @mrwtch An expert in estimating large numbers, I see. I guess your field of vision must spread across London in one glance?
@barner_ucsd @samuelmehr @chazfirestone @spiantado @JoshHMcDermott Totally. I was just sayin that there's no reason to assume we have only one heuristic for estimating large numbers.
We’re learning to group pennies in an array as a strategy for estimating large numbers @rosevilleslp19 @LauraBa48751309 @gecdsbpro @ClaraHowitt #GECDSBslp2019 https://t.co/g231eaA4qK
Grade 6...Estimating large numbers... #HandsOnLearning #MathIsFun https://t.co/anOaBBqahP
Today is the last day of Math Week, and phew! What a week! Our 8th graders have been hard at work solving complex problems—correcting traffic jams, collecting data & estimating large numbers. These are just a few of our project-based learning techniques that foster innovation
