Abstract in brief

  • Delirium in elderly people is an acute decline in attention and cognitive function that is common, serious, and often not recognized, especially in those aged 65 or older.
  • Prevention primarily involves managing multiple risk factors through non-drug strategies, as the evidence supporting the use of medications for prevention or treatment is weak; reducing sedation and analgesics and using nonpharmacological approaches are recommended.
  • Delirium serves as a key indicator of brain vulnerability and potential cognitive decline, highlighting the need for system-wide improvements in healthcare practices, public awareness, and research funding to better address this condition.

@ABelleMusic @Grosdoriane Ahh I see. Was she septic at the hospital though? UTIs without sepsis cause delirium in elderly people. It's very common, that's why I was shocked thinking they didn't test. Just curious because idk how she would have survived 4 weeks of being septic either.

@GenFlynn I think you might have a UTI, it causes delirium in elderly people, like yourself.

More signs of Covid virus to look out for. Most commonly reported six - aside from the three official symptoms - are: headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, muscle pains, diarrhoea, skin rash and confusion and delirium in elderly people. Really, I get all just watching @LFC

Today I read "Delirium in elderly people" from Lancet (https://t.co/sdiKK1N8B9) It helped me understand predisposing and percipitating factors. Also, Hospital Elder Life Program is new to me ! Kinda neat. https://t.co/gx7pzNr7jU

@wendyburn @rcpsychTrainees Holistic psychiatry with an understanding of the importance of hydration, nutrition, good care, social and family support as well as medication. Medication can help but delirium in elderly people can be caused by dehydration which is why the basics are so important

@scottjohnson This happened in a hospital in the UK. The victim is 78, and her roommate, who switched off the oxygen machine not once but twice, is 72. Given the frequency of delirium in elderly people administered anesthesia or painkillers, the action may not have been deliberate.
