The Risks of Pesticides to Bee Navigation and Food Security
Approximately 75% of global food production relies on pollinators like bees. Unfortunately, pesticides are threatening vital bee populations, potentially causing future food crises. Learn about specific pesticides and their impact on bee navigation and survival.
Impact of Neonicotinoids on Honeybee Navigation and Survival
Start your Sunday off with a little bee science. Recent studies show pesticides, especially neonicotinoids, impair honeybee navigation, affecting their ability to return to the hive and survive, raising concerns about pesticide use in agriculture.

Abstract Synopsis
- The study investigated how three neonicotinoids (imidacloprid, clothianidin, and thiacloprid) affect honeybee navigation by applying nonlethal doses and tracking their flight paths, revealing that while initial navigation was less affected, the bees’ ability to successfully return to the hive was significantly impaired.
- The results showed treated bees were less likely to successfully return, made incorrect turns near landscape features, and performed less directed homing flights, indicating that neonicotinoids interfere specifically with the memory retrieval or use of navigation information during the final homing phase.
- These effects suggest that nonlethal exposure to these pesticides disrupts crucial navigation memory processes in honeybees, which has implications for their survival and for the broader use of neonicotinoids in agriculture.
