Understanding Low Carb Diets and Heart Disease Risk Factors
Dr. Ethan Weiss discusses the impact of saturated fats, cholesterol, and ApoB on heart health within a low carb diet. He explains how ApoB levels and HDL function relate to atherosclerotic risk, highlighting the importance of calcium scores and risk prediction.
Understanding LDL Transcytosis and Its Role in Heart Disease Prevention
LDL transcytosis across the endothelium initiates atherosclerosis by depositing LDL into the arterial wall. Recent research highlights crucial mechanisms like SRBI and ALK1 involved in this process, paving the way for potential therapies to reduce LDL buildup and prevent heart disease.

Abstract Synopsis
- The study analyzed data from 7 placebo-controlled statin trials to determine which lipid marker (LDL-C, non-HDL-C, or apoB) best predicts the reduction in coronary heart disease risk from statin therapy, finding that apoB is most closely related.
- Both frequentist and Bayesian statistical methods showed that decreases in apoB levels are more strongly associated with the reduction in cardiovascular risk compared to LDL-C and non-HDL-C, with Bayesian analysis strongly favoring apoB as the best marker.
- The findings suggest that monitoring apoB levels may provide a better assessment of lipid-lowering treatment effectiveness and overall risk reduction in coronary heart disease prevention than traditional lipid markers.
