Abstract in brief

The evolution of life on Earth shows two main trends: increasing diversification, which spreads life across various environments and energy sources, and increasing integration, where smaller entities combine into larger cooperative groups, from cells to complex organisms and societies.
Both trends are driven by natural selection and are likely to continue, potentially leading to the emergence of a global cooperative entity that integrates life, matter, energy, and technology across the planet.
The paper argues that this trajectory toward global integration meets scientific scrutiny and addresses previous criticisms of the idea that evolution has a directional purpose, suggesting a purposeful overall direction in the evolution of life.]
