The Kraken myth originated from sailors' terrifying tales of a sea monster, which modern science now understands was actually based on sightings of giant squids from the genus Architeuthis.
Despite reaching lengths of up to 18 meters, giant squids are extremely elusive, making them difficult for scientists to study and learn about, leaving much of their biology still a mystery.
