Abstract Synopsis
- The study investigates the phenomenon of feeling a presence (FoP) or sensing someone nearby when no one is there, revealing it as an illusory perception of one’s own body caused by brain lesions in specific areas like the temporoparietal and insular cortex.
- Researchers performed lesion analysis in patients with neurological FoP, linking sensorimotor loss to these illusions, and developed a robotic system to recreate the experience in healthy individuals by creating sensorimotor conflicts.
- The results show that FoP arises from misinterpreting sensory and motor signals relating to one’s own body, shedding light on how the brain constructs the sense of self versus other, and providing insights into hallucinations in conditions like schizophrenia.
