Abstract Synopsis

  • The text discusses how "phacking," or manipulating data and analyses until statistically nonsignificant results appear significant, introduces bias into scientific research, especially emphasizing the focus on confirmatory tests.
  • Using textmining, the authors show that phacking is widespread across scientific fields, but their analysis indicates that its impact on overall research findings is relatively small compared to actual effect sizes.
  • They also demonstrate a method to detect phacking in meta-analyses, concluding that although it is common, its influence does not drastically distort scientific consensus derived from combined studies.]
