Related to Krugman's insight, I think many people elect to live in cargo cults. There are many findings and social facts known to be false, yet there's no updating. People reason without thinking about if their anchors are wrong. Several textbooks still cover stereotype threat! https://t.co/Y7VKBPOGD2 https://t.co/E35cputrl1

@xyzsamsara @avidseries Bias endures in subtle forms, but overt racial discrimination declined sharply after 1960s reforms like the Civil Rights Act. Stereotype threat experiments yield modest effects—meta-analyses estimate ~0.3 standard deviations—not enough to bridge 1+ SD gaps observed consistently.

"If there’s no solid (and plausible) adaptive reasoning in which one grounds their work – as there isn’t with stereotype threat – it should come as no surprise that effects flicker in and out of existence."

Using names and pronouns, AI text reveals bias through subtle identity cues—triggering harmful priming effects like stereotype threat in minoritized groups. #aibias

"It is plainly obvious to anyone who takes a serious look at the empirical evidence that stereotype threat is not supported by the data. So why does it persist?"

What? No. There's a large body of stereotype threat literature, of which some findings fail to replicate. You learned that this means the whole concept has been refuted? Also stereotype threat doesn't require adversarial scenarios. Teachers can be *good* and the effect can be present.

I was under the impression stereotype threat was a victim of the replication crisis. Anyway, a lot of purported explanations (like ST) just don't pass the sniff test. Iodine deficiency lowers IQ by ~10 points, yet a condescending teacher accounts for a significant proportion of an SD difference?

Neither of these actually speak to the variable in question. A self-report survey response on racial attitudes doesn't tell you anything at all about the extent to which you experience stereotype threat. We can try to measure that, but we just don't have necessary historical data to compare.

In particular, perniciously #inequitable #conventions emerge even without factors that we usually blame for them-such as #bias or stereotype threat. They are simply the common end products of #cultural #evolutionary processes where everyone learns to do what is best for themselves.

I mean, yes people who believe "manned vs crewed" makes a difference are insane but they were a better, more tolerable form of insane. Some of them (the dworkinoid/hooksoid freaks, stereotype threat cult etc) were really REALLY bad, but even they did not torch the fucking global economy

I sort of do, the insane shit like the paper that explicitly equivocates between whiteness-as-ostensible-cultural-phenomenon and color of whiteboard and asserts using latter promotes former, or the insane stereotype threat replication-crisised shit. But it's wild to pin that as "essence of woke"

I was not taught it, but the stereotype threat phenomenon comes to mind (actually a weak effect, but good to make sure to avoid the possibility). I am more concerned about how the questions are written (like categorizing language skills, gender, race, etc.)

Yes I think it is - I'm not talking about stereotype threat manipulations, to be clear. Outcomes are also more likely to be affected to the extent that they're conceptually relevant to the identity too - so, ingroup favouritism yes, but performance on an irrelevant cog task, probably not

Is this evidence any good though? Genuinely don't know that literature. There's dozens if not hundred of studies with stereotype threat manipulations, and none of them have held up in registered replications etc

As an #educator, a #woman, a #latinx, I have witnessed the impact of stereotype threat personally and in the classroom. An observant #teacher can do so much to mitigate the effects of this phenomenon on our students. https://t.co/wSEYF4tKn6

@Evidentialism1 @NoTotally At the point that women and non-whites are not faced with stereotype threat (https://t.co/z6siSVmYVt), and research demonstrates that gatekeeping on the basis of gender or ethnicity isn't actually happening, at THAT point affirmative action should go.
