AI synopsis

What people are saying

The discussions reflect a high level of interest, with many posts exploring the role of oxalates in inflammation beyond kidneys, as seen in comments about autism and arthritis, and questions about the inflammasome's effects in other tissues. The tone varies from curiosity to skepticism, indicating active engagement but some caution about the current state of research and its wider implications.

AgreementModerate agreement

Most discussions acknowledge the potential link between oxalate, inflammasome activation, and kidney disease, suggesting general support for the research's implications.

InterestHigh interest

The posts display high interest, especially with references to the broader effects of oxalates on inflammation beyond kidney issues and specific mentions of conditions like autism and arthritis.

EngagementModerate engagement

Many users engage deeply by questioning mechanisms, suggesting broader impacts, and referencing additional studies or concepts, indicating active participation.

ImpactModerate impact

While some discussions highlight the importance of the research for understanding disease processes, the overall perception of its immediate impact remains moderate, with some users concerned about overlooked or unaddressed areas.

Abstract in brief

  • Oxalate buildup from metabolism, particularly in chronic kidney disease (CKD), can lead to kidney damage due to crystal formation causing inflammation, fibrosis, and faster progression of CKD.
  • The NOD-like receptor family, specifically the NLRP3 inflammasome, is a key player in the inflammation caused by oxalate crystals, and studies show that removing inflammasome proteins can protect against this inflammation and kidney failure.
  • The article suggests that targeting oxalate-induced inflammasome activation or reducing plasma oxalate levels could potentially prevent or lessen kidney damage, supporting the need for clinical trials.

Spinach? Great option if you want to: 1. Drive inflammation. https://t.co/RKMKa9LD91 2. Deplete minerals. (You don’t get much minerals from spinach either; they are not bioavailable.) Calcium chelation is how kidney stones form. https://t.co/J4ttWn9vKb 3. Kidney stones are well https://t.co/6kt4RZqzYu

Given that oxalate can drive inflammation all on its own (see link below), I’d be more suspicious of that in damage to lungs than cellulose (although surely cellulose is not good either). https://t.co/RKMKa9LD91

From the abstract; “The inflammasome has recently been identified to play a critical role in oxalate-induced renal inflammation.” What if oxalate also impacts inflammation (and the inflammasome) in tissues outside the kidney? https://t.co/RKMKa9LD91

@PsuedoEpiphany Totally running under the radar. No one thinks oxalate is relevant unless you get kidney stones. While the research is starting to be available to show oxalate can drive the inflammasome, they are only looking in the kidney. https://t.co/RKMKa9LD91

@MikeCruise18 @nicknorwitz Can also drive the inflammasome. May be implicated in other kidney disease. Could it be doing this elsewhere in the body?
