What people are saying
Overall, the discussions reflect keen interest, as seen in references to the paper’s findings about at least 27 independent evolutions of bioluminescence, and appreciation for visual data like the distribution shown in the figures. The tone is both intrigued and appreciative, with comments that connect scientific insights to personal themes and broader ecological implications, indicating a strong perceived impact of the research.
Most discussions acknowledge the significance of the findings, particularly emphasizing the multiple independent events of bioluminescence evolution highlighted in the publication.
The discussions show strong curiosity, referencing specific examples like the distribution of luminous fish and their ecological roles, indicating high engagement with the topic.
Participants actively interpret figures and relate the research to personal interests or themes like 'fishmas,' demonstrating thoughtful engagement.
The social discussions recognize the research’s influence in understanding marine ecology and evolution, hinting at its broader scientific importance.
Abstract in brief
- Bioluminescence is mostly found in marine animals and has evolved many times independently in rayfinned fishes, with 27 separate events identified.
- The widespread and repeated evolution of bioluminescence suggests it plays an important role in the ecology of various fish species, especially in deep-sea environments.
- Certain bioluminescent fish lineages, especially those in deep water that use their light for communication, food, or reproduction, are particularly diverse and species-rich relative to their age.]

C. dussumieri is rather unassuming, but it was a big part of me choosing this theme for #25DaysOfFishmas. Davis et al's 2016 paper has this beautiful figure showing the distribution of light in fishes, and the single luminous Clupeiform - anchovy - really intrigued me!
