Participants believe this research could transform treatment approaches for inflammatory diseases, highlighting the significance with words like 'game changer' and emphasizing broader implications for autoimmune conditions.
Abstract in brief
Vagus nerve stimulation can reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines like TNF, IL-1, and IL-6, which are involved in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and this has been demonstrated in both animal models and human patients.
The study showed that using an implantable vagus nerve stimulator in epilepsy patients decreased cytokine production for up to 84 days, and in RA patients, it significantly improved disease severity scores.
These findings suggest that targeting the inflammatory reflex via vagus nerve stimulation could be a new, mechanism-based approach to treat RA and potentially other autoimmune or autoinflammatory diseases.
