Does a chapter a day keep the doctor away & apples have nothing to do with it? Maybe! Adults who regularly read books lived 2yrs longer over a 12-year follow-up than non-readers, likely due to #reading's powerful cognitive benefits https://t.co/yJmEd62Q9d

A chapter a day: Association of book reading with longevity? This would be a good time to pop in a snappy quote about the wonders of reading from some astute famous person. Instead, here's one of my summer reads tucked under my arm while I’m “booking up” for my autumnal list. https://t.co/FB2wmmmFfh

Abstract Synopsis

  • Reading books is linked to a longer lifespan compared to not reading or reading other materials like newspapers or magazines.
  • The study found that people who read books had a significant survival advantage, with a 23-month longer survival at the 80% survival point and a 20% reduction in risk of death over 12 years.
  • The positive effect of reading books on longevity is partly explained by better cognition, meaning the mental engagement from reading may contribute to increased lifespan.]
