Abstract in brief
- Trichotillomania is a disorder where people repeatedly pull out their hair, causing hair loss and affecting daily functioning, and has been known since the 19th century but hasn't been extensively studied.
- It is quite common, with about 0.5% to 20% of people experiencing it at any given time, and recent classifications in the DSM-5 distinguish it from OCD, though it was previously grouped with it.
- Treatment approaches for trichotillomania, such as habit reversal therapy, medications like N-acetyl cysteine or olanzapine, differ significantly from OCD treatments, and the article suggests specific management strategies based on clinical experience and research.]

I have such a similar experience to your misdiagnosis. Autistic traits were met with strict unkindness and punishment, often making the problem worse. I never realized that my trichotillomania may be asd stimming!! So much therapy to 'get rid of it' lol, never helped. Much to think about today.
trichotillomania is terrible. Dealt with it since I was a preteen and good god I can’t stop. Luckily, I don’t pluck my head hair because holy fuck I’d be so sad. But, my eyebrows? They’re SUFFERING. I’ve done everything to keep myself from mutilating them. I just can’t stop. I feel ugly.

@Thebiglade Yes but not in nearly two years and I don't have the stomach to do it anyways. I hate seeing blood so cutting was always off the table but I struggled massively with trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling) when I was 13/14 which left a huge bald spot at such a young age
I’ll match all of those and throw in some OCD, ARFID, dermatillomania, Trichotillomania, and PICA.

So I think there’s a normal amount that a normal person wants to pick a scab. Now… give that person Trichotillomania (which gives extra “pick all the things” triggers) and eczema of the ear canal. I am TRYING SO HARD to heal my ears rn.
All the progress I've made with my trichotillomania has gone down the drain. It's incredibly frustrating.
@caspystar DO NOT DO IT!!! I HAVE TRICHOTILLOMANIA AND USED TO PULL MY LASHES I WAS MISSING HALF OF THEM AT ONE POINT!! IT IS A SLIPPERY SLOPE STOP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE
@illicitpoast Trichotillomania on the brows.
I would say "unless it's trichotillomania," but my trich mainly effects my eyebrows, & removing all of your eyebrow hair for makeup purposes is a thing, so you're disturbingly extremely right.
Holidays can be beautiful, but if you live with Trichotillomania they can also be overwhelming. Travel, money stress + “always be happy” pressure can all increase urges to pull. You’re not failing – your nervous system is just overloaded. Be gentle with yourself.
There aren't laws about posting online when you're schizophrenic. No bills being passed about trichotillomania. Nobody suggested that bipolar people just stop posting online. SO WHY- why is there such a huge effort to keep people with eedees and BD off of the Internet? Suffer alone. Fuck you.

Ferrite putty- 13/10 This fidget toy is my addiction. I love the feeling and the sound it makes, I also love when I dip one of the magnetic stones in the putty. It also helps with my trichotillomania and dermatillomania. Unfortunately the little magnets go everywhere and it hurts my hand sometimes.

This article provides an overview of trichotillomania, an obsessive-compulsive disorder in which people repeatedly pull out their body hair.
For what it's worth, I like hair, skin and nails supplements. I take these! We've got diff circumstances, I needed help w hair regrowth after a 5 year experience w trichotillomania. It seemed to help me with regrowing thicker, healthier hair, and faster than I thought I would so I'm a big fan lol

Yep I do this. But I figured it was part of having Trichotillomania. I prefer it to the hair pulling which I used to do til my hand hurt, but it's not so bad these days. Still there, but much milder. Its a kind of OCD. I don't know why either, but I've had it since childhood.
Men are an oddity cause I like looking but touching is a major no-go. Fascinates myself. I've just never been big on hair. Even my own. Even had trichotillomania bad until I wrestled that one 99% under control. That was one unexpected nice thing with the ex, who also felt similarly wrt themselves.
#1 Question I get asked about Trichotillomania: Does it hurt? For me? Less when I’m pulling, more when I’m healing/regrowing. The stabbing/poking feeling is worse to me than the pull. That’s why I get stuck in the pulling phase a lot which suuucks.
Trichotillomania is a bitch I’m stuck at the regrowth phase and now my lash-lines are tiny iron maidens just stabbing into each other any time I blink I’m in helllllll
Well i don't have eyebrows (this whole ordeal triggered my trichotillomania) and have very dark circles right now.

All the cool kids have trichotillomania. Anyone worth their salt in this world is freaking out because they can’t find their tweezers right now.
I’ve worn makeup in one way or another since I was 9 years old starting with eyeliner & brow gel to cover my trichotillomania in order to avoid bullying at school. Taught myself gore makeup/SFX in middle/high school, also wore colored eyeliner to match my T-Shirts every day. I’m not even that femme.

I think the more I want to do something, the more stretched excuses I can come up with. if I didn't want it the excuse would just be "don't wanna". if it's "how will my trichotillomania cope with having no facial hair" well. that's something sus

If it was stress, trichotillomania, autophagia, eating moldy/expired things, sharp tools, hights, skipping meals. All ways I’m fine with my self doing but I go and do the one thing I cant stand my self doing, bingeing. Eating to the point of gaining and physically pain as well as mental distress

I was having a really rough and prolonged bout of insomnia. And I have been able to sleep better-ish, but my AHDH and Trichotillomania were both like “loooooool. Hi.” So now I’m trying to reintroduce one of the things I was on before.
I developed trichotillomania when I was 7. I started seeing a psychologist soon after. When I was 11 I developed insomnia and a phobia of sleeping. I was so terrified of sleep because of the nightmares that followed and the fact I'd have to go to school again the next day.

Despite adolescence being a critical age for the emergence of hair-pulling disorder (trichotillomania) and co-occurring symptoms, there are huge gaps in our understanding of the features of hair-pulling, what causes and keeps it going.
