Non-destructive Terahertz Method for Pharmaceutical Tablet Porosity and Quality
This method rapidly measures tablet porosity noninvasively, correlating with hardness, disintegration, and dissolution. It enables real-time quality assessment without sample preparation, suitable for integration into manufacturing processes.
Impact of Tablet Manufacturing on Pharmaceutical Quality and Disintegration
Presentation by Dr Prince Bawuah at the IFPAC 2021 virtual meeting discusses how process variations affect tablet disintegration and drug release using non-destructive terahertz spectroscopy for quality assessment.

Abstract Synopsis
- This study demonstrates that terahertz (THz) transmission measurements can be used nondestructively to predict disintegration time and active ingredient dissolution in commercial tablets, specifically after 15, 20, and 25 minutes.
- By analyzing 18 batches of tablets produced through various process conditions, researchers found a strong linear correlation between the effective refractive index (n) measured by THz and both disintegration time and dissolution after 15 minutes, outperforming traditional hardness tests.
- The findings suggest that THz measurements, due to their high penetration power and contactless nature, are promising tools for monitoring key quality attributes during tablet manufacturing without the need for sample destruction.]
