AI synopsis

What people are saying

The group shows strong agreement that nociception is essential for pain and discusses its biological basis, with examples like references to recent research on insect reflexes and neural pathways. The tone is investigative and supportive, emphasizing the importance of precise definitions and potential applications in medicine, AI, and animal welfare, which underscores the significance and broad impact of the publication.

AgreementStrong agreement

Most discussions support the core idea that nociception is necessary for pain and emphasize the importance of distinguishing pain from mere physiological responses, showing strong consensus in the community.

InterestHigh interest

Posters demonstrate high curiosity about the topic, referencing recent studies, ongoing debates, and implications for medicine and AI, indicating a deep engagement with the subject.

EngagementHigh engagement

Many discussions include citations of scientific research, debates over definitions, and applications in animals and humans, reflecting an active and layered engagement with the material.

ImpactHigh impact

The discourse reflects a recognition that understanding nociception could revolutionize pain management, animal welfare, and AI ethics, suggesting a high potential impact on science and society.

Abstract in brief

  • Nociception is the body's way of sensing harmful stimuli like heat, mechanical pressure, and chemicals to help animals avoid tissue damage.
  • This process involves special neurons called nociceptors that detect potential harm and send signals to the brain.
  • The signals from nociceptors lead to protective behaviors and may be perceived as pain, helping animals respond to danger.]

Every mechanism they have works full time, in vain, as your stomach acid kills them. So there goes the 'feel suffering' argument.

Beyond the spinal cord, massage affects descending pathways from the brain that regulate pain. This activates the periaqueductal gray, nucleus raphe magnus, & other brainstem regions are involved in descending inhibition. These areas release serotonin, noradrenaline, etc. that suppress nociception.

Not sure of the thread, but I'll jump in. Important to distinguish 'pain' from 'nociception'. Nociceptors are the peripheral receptors that respond to tissue damage. Pain is in the brain; In general, nociceptor activation leads to pain, an aspect of conscious awareness. (continued).

Thanks, but this does not address the core of the argument, which is that sentience has been conflated with consciousness for motivated reasons. Consciousness is ambiguous and sentience is not. It does not deal with subjective experience. It deals with nociception and the broader tactile sense.

Excellent thinking, that is the dominant theory for the evolution of nociception and pain. We also know that congenital pain insensitivity is highly maladaptive and shortens life expectancy. Therefore there is no reason to believe sentience would evolve without pain.

In a great timing, our companion paper for the refutation of the aphorism “nociception is neither necessary nor sufficient for pain” was also accepted. We decided to split the project in to two parts as it was too extensive as one paper and demanded a thorough logical dissection https://t.co/6egAbpAONI

@arianek @jdibon @AsafKlaf Yes! i have doubts ‘central sensitisation’ as ‘disease’ exists, though not as strong as my doubt it’s playing a pathological role in all chronic pain. I think pathologising sensitisation in response to nociception is akin to pathologising immune activation in response to infxn.

@arianek @jdibon @AsafKlaf I’ve done best to prove my instinct wrong, but what I’ve learned so far suggests it wasn’t: I suspect that in most cases, remove the cause of the nociception, and the ‘central sensitisation’ piece will resolve itself with time, as it does with acute pain after successful healing.

The twist is that most humans actually have way more than six senses, so he isn’t all that special. There’s some disagreement on what exactly counts, but thermoception (heat), equilibrioception (balance), nociception (pain) and proprioception (the sense of where your body parts are) are common ones.

Someone might think it's true because pain often arises prior to thought and only then is labeled with the concept "pain". Nociception has its own neural pathway, independent of conceptual processing. Also, we assume babies, cats, dogs, feel pain but don't apply the concept "pain". Are we wrong?

Fear & pain is ancient. Pain (nociception) is 600 million years old (multicellular animals) Fear (emotion) & affective pain (conscious suffering): Full-fledged conditioned fear emerged in vertebrates 400–500 Mya. Humans are causing peak fear & pain. Life has never suffered more than today.
