AI synopsis

What people are saying

Participants show interest by exploring detailed physiological mechanisms, such as hypoalbuminaemic alkalosis being counteracted by hyperchloraemic acidosis, and discuss practical treatment considerations, exemplified by references to specific complex acid-base disturbances highlighted in the publication. The tone and focus on clinical relevance and physiopathology indicate a moderate but meaningful level of engagement and perceived impact.

AgreementModerate agreement

Most discussions acknowledge the complexity of acid-base disorders in liver disease, with some highlighting the importance of understanding these physiopathological changes.

InterestModerate interest

The posts demonstrate a general interest, especially among those focusing on the physiological mechanisms and clinical implications.

EngagementModerate engagement

Participants delve into specific metabolic disturbances, providing summaries and examples, implying moderate engagement.

ImpactModerate impact

These discussions suggest a recognition of the importance of understanding these disorders for clinical practice, though the engagement remains somewhat academic.

Abstract in brief

  • The liver is a key regulator of acid-base balance, alongside the kidneys and lungs, but disorders can complicate its function.
  • Patients with chronic liver disease may experience a range of metabolic acid-base disorders, often masked by standard measurements like pH, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive model for assessment.
  • In critically ill liver patients, this balance can shift towards metabolic acidosis due to factors like sepsis or bleeding, making an understanding of these disturbances crucial for effective treatment.

@DrQiu @TableRounds @AnnKumfer I usually think of relative ⬆️ Cl- in NAGMA and would expect AGMA with normal Cl- from liver cirrhosis sequelae ie lactic acidosis. paging @KidneyWars for curbside

Patients with stable chronic liver disease have several offsetting acidifying and alkalinising metabolic acid-base disorders. Hypoalbuminaemic alkalosis is counteracted by hyperchloraemic and dilutional acidosis, resulting in a normal overall base excess https://t.co/JvxzJI08xv
