Abstract in brief

  • The study of deforestation in the Amazon reveals that forest loss is shifting from southern Brazil to Peru and Bolivia, indicating changing hotspots in the rainforest.
  • While large forest clearings over 50 hectares have decreased, small clearings of about 1 hectare have increased significantly between 2001 and 2014.
  • The expansion of small-scale, low-density forest loss during 2008-2014 poses a new and concerning challenge for conserving the Amazon, even though overall deforestation rates have gone down.]
