Abstract in brief
- Proprioception is the internal sense that allows us to perceive our body position and movement, but it is often not consciously noticed.
- The case of Ian Waterman illustrates how losing proprioception can severely impair movement and coordination, making even basic actions difficult without sensory feedback.
- Despite such challenges, with persistent effort and visual cues, individuals can relearn to control their body movements, highlighting the importance of proprioception in everyday life.]

Tbf some of us are masochists from birth. You kinda gotta be a sicko who likes some pain to play at all. As a parent I’ve learned about high proprioception and sensory seekers and yep that seems genetic, a prerequisite for contact sports, and I definitely see it in my kids
Proprioception = body awareness in motion. Researchers now distinguish “low-level” (joint/muscle sensing) from “high-level” (spatial self-mapping) proprioception—both vital in Yoga Therapy. The body’s map of itself is how we feel at home in motion. (Hérroux et al., 2022, J Appl Physiol, 132, 811–8)

It gets even weirder. We actually don't have sensory inputs for friction directly: These are also inferred from other phenomena (e.g., proprioception), which in turn rely on still other phenomena. Even senses that have specialized receptors (like temperature) are just nerves that fire differently...
Adventures in bass playing: can confirm that learning a large instrument apparently has not improved my proprioception. Or lack thereof. Yet, anyway. >bang<
Don't forget about proprioception. Another bsky post wrote about doing whole-building surveillance with multiple cameras, located everywhere, how this is disorienting at first, but becomes a natural "sixth sense" with time. There is no reason to limit to sensors attached only to the moving robot.
As I say, that’s the shows I’ve worked on. Even the fun stuff. I’ve presented a 12 year old ballerina as an expert on balance on a kids show. They’re not qualified in any study of proprioception, let alone inner ear functions. But they have mastered the art of using such feedback mechanisms.

"she's got a sixth sense" you mean proprioception?
no one: kc: I take the pro out of proprioception!
I remain fascinated by the sheer number of humans who, as soon as they pop on some headphones, lose every last shred of proprioception or sense that other people might be occupying the same space. And every single one of them was at King’s Cross this evening, it seems.
1. No seating is an issue. I think there's space for a perch (see 3). 2. Even with the buggy parked there is space to walk and wheel past on the pavement. 3. If pavement space isn't enough, i.e wider wheelchair or difficulties with proprioception, the cycle lane is flush and can be used. 2/
'Proprioception' Your body will have to adapt movement & stance
Briefly, for about a week or so, and then it went away. It was a sense of it being "present" but not actually being there when I'd reach for it. I didn't get the itching sensation, just a proprioception one.
Well, that made my day. As part of my Phase 0 bodybuilding/fitness plan, I am documenting days that I believe should be. I have been researching genetics, cellular responses and proprioception, as well as lasting effects from each day. It turns out I may very well be a hyper-responder (rare).
I’m not a podiatrist but raised heel height might make it easier for him to allow gravity to help him move the leg forward post stroke. His proprioception has been gone for over a year hence zig zag walking & can’t open bin truck door or use umbrellas either.

I know it's just an autistic proprioception issue that means I bang my feet against furniture constantly, but it's so trivially easy to just therianize it by saying "my body knows I should have hooves"
Proprioception and new function for two pharyngeal neurons!
Interesting. Can ghosts see their own limbs? ... how does proprioception work on the ethereal plane?
I think the argument that "the idea of consciousness is a category error" is starting to click a bit better for me now. It's not that consciousness doesn't exist, it's that it's an umbrella for several related concepts: wakefulness, proprioception, an internal monologue, haecceity, sensory input…
like does equipment, gear, or activities that look like they'd fuck you up or injure you look or sound appealing or attractive to you if your efascia which is connected to emotion and proprioception/brain shit is properly functioning? lol
things that don't help your balance, proprioception, wound healing, bone density, or make you faster: bodybuilding oh and space shoes…that is all, lol
A humanoid doing kung fu isn’t the story—the cadence and control are. Unitree’s G1 “Kungfu Kid V6.0” shows live‑adaptive movement that feels more like proprioception than pre‑baked demos. The big question: can this precision translate from flashy moves to reliable chores and 3‑shift factory tasks?

Look I know now is NOT the time to start Thinking Seriously about this, but also, being made of bolted-together body parts from multiple different body parts has GOT to fuck up your sense of proprioception.
I sold my bicycle today. I hadn't been on it for a lot of years, but selling it got me in the feelings. It's not the bike, it's the acceptance that I will never again be able to ride one. The bit of my brain that does balance and proprioception, kinda doesn't, so bike riding terrifyingly dangerous.
Sinus headaches are so miserable and made even worse by the fact that until I clue in that my face or ears hurt (thanks, poor proprioception), if it's particularly bad I think it might be the aneurysm again. This afternoon/eve has been pretty sucky. Just hoping my painkillers/nasal spray kick in!
I almost always have a minor injury healing bc I have the proprioception of a deaf bat
For bondage purposes it really depends on the context: having his tail tied up can add a thrilling sense of immobilization but it's also one of the more likely things to make him feel overwhelmed since it's an important way for Miqo'te to maintain a sense of balance and proprioception.
Being nobody is a great way to observe a "somebody" coming at you and having the proprioception to step aside just prior to impact.

fucky proprioception after about 20-30hrs in VR is wild... also weird that people apparently look back at this with rose tinted glasses and miss it. it's not comfortable nor uncomfortable just kinda.. "weird... eyes followed a motion I didnt do" "huh my hand feels funny but not numb"
I get that.. I don’t remember how long I spent trying to visualize myself, but I eventually felt very confident in my theriotype and coloration. My sona is a playful expansion of that, so don’t forget you have freedom to individualize beyond your natural proprioception of yourself!
both have had hand tracking for years now, yeah ironically, both are discovering that spatial speed and accuracy is -abysmal- compared to more grounded hardware like mice and keyboards our proprioception just isn't as good out in the middle of virtual space. we're tactile primates
Out of interest, what exactly would say the link between touch and proprioception is? One could treat them as separate sense-modalities, though no doubt there are cross-modal influences between them (as for many of the other senses—vision and balance, for example).
It is pretty essential to proprioception.
What well meaning people dont understand is when things like yoga "work" they do so because there's a quite well understood mechanism going on for both the physical practice AND the problem its being directed at (like ppl losing proprioception in PTSD). Everything is a tool, not panacea
"❗❗❗" Even just the act of finding that point of resistance must have been causing imperceptible damage. "❗❗❗" I wonder how mere proprioception signaled about something like that. What sensations would it cause? "❗❗❗" "❗❗❗" "❗❗❗" My vision was slowly filling with red as I kept working. (7/9)
Unlike me, Lied didn't have skin installed, nor was he equipped with the related sensory capabilities beyond basic proprioception. All of his cute little reactions to me messing with his insides were cognitive in nature. Even the contempt that I flashed as a test got a rise out of him. (3/9)

I just realised I lose track of where my fingers are, internally, if I stop moving them for too long lol Just fingers, I still have a very good proprioception on everything else, except fingers, and maybe toes (I never really paid attention to my toes).

I’m sure it’s different for lots of folks. I do it because one of my ADHD symptoms is a weak sense of proprioception (awareness of the body’s positioning and movement) so I routinely forget where my limbs are and don’t bring them back to resting position. It’s also why I’m so clumsy.

Sounds like your neuromap of that area changed. Also sounds like your describing Hypermobility Ehler's Danlos Syndrome. Sitting cross legged is a Hypermobility symptom because the bodys proprioception isn't getting enough info when sitting normal. KruseElite on YouTube has simple exercises for this.
We're selling my old bike (bicycle not motor). It's been in the garage for years and getting rid of it is long overdue, but it's giving me the big feelings. I'll never be able to ride it again. My brain isn't good with the whole proprioception thing, so it would be terrifying and dangerous.
My body image and sense of proprioception have not caught up to the new reality that an old Navy small is kind of roomy. One day perhaps I will even get some NEW clothes!
Another part of it is my body is very clearly asleep at this point. I’m in partial body lock, but the sensation usually disappears as soon as I move. I can also usually still open my eyes and nothing looks far away. It’s just my sense of touch and proprioception.
When I say feel, it’s more like a combination of my proprioception of the world is out of wack, like my body parts are all very far apart from each other, and from the rest of the world, but my mental body image hasn’t changed. My bed and blankets all feel far away and yet heavy and dull too.
Yeah, I don’t think humans really have a frame of reference to actually understand equine proprioception. It’s so much more powerful as a sense in horses that it’s almost futile to try to wrap our ape minds around it.
I'm guessing they have great proprioception of their wind hole in this quaint little town
i'm lucky i don't have vertigo or anything like that, but not being able to hear out of my left ear really fucks with my proprioception. it's, like, anything over there that i can't see simply doesn't exist until i bump into it. also, my vision sucks.

I‘m waiting for an appt. for POTS too. It’s in Vancouver, about 5 hours away, but I don’t care. I had to wear a holter monitor from yesterday until this morning. Sure enough, after I brought it back, when I became really symptomatic. My proprioception as so bad earlier, I almost fell of the porch.
He will claim that the detainee caused his injury, when it was his own lack of coordination and proprioception. Again, I ask: what's the official policy regarding steroids, because these agents all seem juiced. Steroids will enhance muscle mass, but do nothing for balance and agility.
There's the Heidegger thing, Sein-zum-Tode (being towards death) Or "mortality salience" I feel like there's no neutral parallel because we have to compartmentalize mortality, so we only actually feel it when it's imminent. Proprioception is always there. Maybe the word is just "temporality"
oooh following, I just wrote a sonnenizio with the word proprioception in it & basically the concept is loss of moorings so interested in the responses you get here.
Seeking a term akin to proprioception but for the sense of one's mortality; does such a thing exist? (I swear I am so fun to talk to.)
I don’t have significant sensory differences (apart from dire interoception and proprioception). I do tread on people and a man once told me under their breath to ‘walk a f***king straight line,’ so I chased him to the tube and told him to say it to my face. He scuttled off
It took 35 years of clumsy, detached misery, and then ultramarathons and HRT, for me to feel grounded in this body even a little bit. And it’s still the wrong shape in a way that fucks with my proprioception every day. So yeah.
Maybe I should expand on it a bit LOL. This man has a kind heart. Not everyone gets to see his soft side, but he is IMMENSELY compassionate, loyal and protective. He’s also physically strong and agile (despite his clumsiness/poor proprioception) so he is a capable fighter and can easily scare - ⬇️
Don't mind me. I just connected the dots between my poor proprioception, learning to drive, and how much that was a struggle. Part of it, I think, is because I drove old tractors as a kid where you are up high, in back, and centered of the vehicle. In cars you are lower, on the left, and forward.
