The discussions reflect a critical stance on lumbar spine fusion, with comments like 'spinal fusions in particular are infamous for not helping' and references to authoritative reviews stating that fusion offers no clear benefit over non-operative options. The tone emphasizes skepticism and advocates for evidence-based, conservative treatments, using words like 'confounding', 'ineffective', and 'should not have been done' which underscore the low perceived efficacy and potential consequences of unnecessary surgeries.
AgreementStrong agreement
Most discussions highlight that the evidence for lumbar spine fusion is weak or nonexistent, with multiple posts citing systematic reviews and reviews by reputable institutions that dismiss its benefits over non-operative treatments.
InterestHigh interest
The social discussions express high curiosity and concern about the evidence and treatment effectiveness, with many comments referencing recent reviews, studies, and clinical implications.
EngagementHigh engagement
Posts involve detailed analysis, referencing specific research papers, systematic reviews, and clinical practices, which indicates deep engagement in understanding and evaluating the evidence.
ImpactHigh impact
The emphasis on the lack of proven benefits and calls for relying on non-surgical approaches could influence clinical decision-making and patient choices, signaling a high potential impact on treatment practices and patient awareness.
Abstract in brief
Lumbar spine fusion is a common, high-cost procedure with significant risks, but current evidence from systematic reviews and trials is generally of low quality.
The evidence suggests that spine fusion does not provide clear benefits over nonoperative treatments for conditions like back pain from degeneration or thoracolumbar fractures; benefits for other conditions like spondylolisthesis are also unclear.
Patients should be fully informed about the limited and low-quality evidence before opting for spinal fusion, including potential benefits and risks compared to nonoperative options.]

Such confounding findings make it challenging to determine relevance. Any associations cannot be interpreted confidently as causal.
The role of such findings also do not change management . Spinal fusion for example has been shown to be ineffective.

This video discusses current challenges in treating low back pain and highlights evidence suggesting that lumbar spine fusion may not provide clear benefits over nonoperative treatments for conditions like degeneration…
The idea that long standing low back pain means there must be something severely wrong with your back that requires more invasive treatment like nerve ablation injections or surgery is flawed. Pain is complex, often not…
Apropos of something in particular I just googled spinal fusion surgery effectiveness and the google AI gave me a summary of SEO spam from spinal surgery clinics. The first actual link, from the Mayo clinic, said no more effective than non-surgical treatments. Shortly after that an -ve NIH review
@PleaseNoWhy1 @ameliaamity @adamfare1996 Spinal fusions in particular are infamous for not helping. I've never met a single person who's had it and been happy with the results. https://t.co/lwmIZg4z7h
3/3: and lots of fusions get done that probably should not have been done. When that happens, the patient is in for a bad time.

As of 2018 no reviews of RCTs or RCTs comparing fusion to any other treatment for degenerative scoliosis. Any change here?

For such a common condition, why do we suck at treating low back pain? In this video, we discuss the medical blunders in managing nonspecific low back pain as well as the benefits of physical therapy. https://t.co/f8L8Mhw9Bv

But yet, Intervention to 'fix it' them, in this case fusion do not work.

Cause. Sedentary lifestyles ? Genetics ? Dunno
Can we test it ? Expensive tests are equivocal.

Does it change management or inform outcome. Nope.

Here's a piece by an ortho surgeon on fusion. Only appears to have benefit for those with spinal tumours. He says not to jump to conclusions yet but there's no evidence to suggest fusions better than non surgical treatment and up to surgeons to prove it is
