Abstract Synopsis
- The study found that a 31-day ketogenic diet (KD) did not significantly affect overall endurance capacity in trained runners, but it did impair exercise efficiency at 70% VO2max, leading to increased energy expenditure and oxygen use.
- Exercise efficiency remained stable at 60% VO2max during the KD, and endurance time to exhaustion was similar before and after the diet, indicating submaximal performance was preserved.
- While the ketogenic diet helped maintain submaximal exercise capacity without needing carbohydrate supplementation, it also posed a higher risk of individual endurance decline due to changes in respiratory exchange ratio and energy utilization.
