Abstract Synopsis
- The study investigates the systemic absorption of active ingredients in four commercial sunscreens—avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule—under conditions of maximal application, as required by FDA guidelines for safety evaluation.
- 24 healthy volunteers applied two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter over 75% of their body four times daily for four days, with blood samples collected over seven days to analyze plasma concentrations of the sunscreen ingredients.
- Results indicated significant absorption of avobenzone and oxybenzone, with geometric mean maximum plasma concentrations reaching up to 40 ng/mL for avobenzone and around 2096 ng/mL for oxybenzone, raising potential safety considerations for these common sunscreen elements.
