Abstract in brief

The study investigates whether dextromethorphan, a drug known to block NMDA receptors, can reduce pain hypersensitivity in humans, as it does in animal models.
The results indicate that a single 30mg dose of dextromethorphan significantly increases pain thresholds in areas of secondary hyperalgesia and primary hyperalgesia, suggesting it can reduce central pain sensitization.
However, dextromethorphan did not affect pain response to thermal stimuli or reaction times, and the occurrence of side effects was similar between the drug and placebo groups.]
