Understanding the function and mechanisms of ontogenetic colour changes (OCC) is a central goal in ethology. A bit of a challenge, though. Researchers must follow individuals as they grow, and some changes may slip by entirely if they occur in wavelengths beyond human vision.

Abstract Synopsis

  • The research focuses on using deep learning and image processing to determine the best colours for animals or objects to either blend into their environment or stand out, considering the environment and observer's visual system, including human and nonhuman viewers.
  • The study applies this method to natural settings like temperate forests and semi-arid deserts, showing that a limited set of samples can predict effective camouflage or visibility colours for different environments and visual systems.
  • Results indicate that colour greatly influences detectability, especially for simulated colourblind animals, and that humans with normal vision are better at detecting camouflaged objects compared to those with dichromatic (colourblind) vision.]
