Abstract Synopsis

  • The gut microbiome is associated with health and disease, but its metabolic functions are not fully understood.
  • Researchers found that the bacteria Veillonella, particularly Veillonella atypica, increased in marathon runners after races and enhanced run time in mice.
  • This study suggests that Veillonella metabolizes lactate produced during exercise into propionate, which contributes to improved athletic performance.
