Abstract in brief
Food intolerances affect up to 20% of people, but diagnosing and managing them is complicated due to varied symptoms and non-immunological causes.
FODMAP sensitivity is well-studied, showing links between dietary factors, gastrointestinal symptoms, and visceral hypersensitivity, while many other food intolerances lack rigorous research for effective management.
A trial-and-error approach is commonly used due to the absence of reliable diagnostic tests, highlighting the need for future research to develop biomarkers that could improve dietary management of food intolerances.
oh yeah that stuff adds +1 Satisfaction to any kind of soup or stew
and while people can have food intolerances to all kinds of things I think that "I ate three pounds of fried meat in salt sauce at the Chinese restaurant and now I feel less good" has some other possible explanations

Until a few months ago I had been vegan for about 20 years, then I discovered my very inconvenient food intolerances, so now I'm exploring seafood and more in Japan. A million thanks to @tutaikobushisawa.bsky.social and @shimakiron.bsky.social for taking me to delicious, local places. おいし!
“nobody had food intolerances in the 80s” - bud, they made us eat carob in the third grade and they put nutritional yeast on our popcorn, don’t piss on me and tell me it’s raining

I'm definitely a foodie with way too many food intolerances. My little town doesn't have a lot of meat alternatives either. I grow a lot of food during gardening season and get creative with veggies. And bake way more than is healthy. We're currently working our way through a German chocolate cake.

@pegpalomba @sola_chad yes Vit D and the B group vitamins for the nervous system. Have bloods done first, to check your vit D levels. Food intolerances and food allergies can affect mood and behaviour.
@SomaKazima2 @xoJoyBelleox Ok, and then what if a person has high blood pressure and can't eat salt or can't eat too much? SMDH. Food intolerances ain't shit to play about. IDGAF if you're gonna be bored, cook the food the right f-ing way. You should all have been fired ffs.
@mecfsskeptic Oh, and MCAS is not “food intolerances” and POTS is not “orthostatic tachycardia”
Both are complex systemic conditions causing OI, brain fog due to reduced cerebral blood flow, exercise intolerance due to preload failure, unrefreshing sleep, insomnia, circadian inversion etc

Whenever I agro tweet there’s a 100% chance that I ate just a bit before. Is this diabetes is this food intolerances is this autoimmune who knows. We’ll find out if I die from it
Before I knew I have a bunch of food intolerances I was a massive foodie, now I think anyone who so much as uses black pepper is a cunt & we should RETVRN to cooking everything plainly and austerely without adding anything. (Too sick to cook, there is NOTHING I can get delivered on ANY of the apps)
Food Intolerances:
Sensitivity to carbohydrates (lactose, fructose) or fiber, which make symptoms worse due to fermentation.
Systemic Symptoms:
Fatigue, brain fog, or joint pain, potentially linked to inflammation or nutrient deficiencies.

Some doctors will disagree with this, even if they are supportive of ME/CFS.

Home baked goodies are usually welcome. I would check to see if there are any food intolerances first though.
@Outdoctrination These food intolerances often signal underlying gut issues: H2S overgrowth (eggs/onions), excess serotonin (gluten), low acid/bile (protein/fat), SIBO/dysbiosis (fiber/sugars/dairy), histamine issues (fermented), oxalates (nuts/veggies), or leaky gut (nightshades). Test & address

@Chuffin_ell I have many food intolerances and I'm veggie so I couldn't eat most of what was on offer. Twice they even forgot about me. If i wasn't spending a fortune on takeout i would've been on toast once a day and that's it. It's WAY more expensive being in hospital than at home.
When life is calm, you can manage this.
But the second, even mild stress appears:
- Sleep tanks
- Digestion collapses
- Mind won't shut off
- Food intolerances show up
- Stress tolerance disappears
This isn't random.

Oh fuck doing alternative menus on Christmas day. You eat what we eat or don't bother showing up.
(Obviously doesn't apply to folk with allergies or food intolerances)
idk what it is about celiac communities and their obsession with self-diagnosing improbable food intolerances (or diagnosing other people with them). It's very funny because they will jump on anyone who does not have biopsy proven celiac.
@ljlovesChrist ur right :( its cuz i have a lot of food intolerances so i have to cut out food groups but it does lead me to binging… ur such a sweetheart thank you

One drink I've gotten into recently is moringa.
(and fwiw, while I know food intolerances differ, I also have to eat low histamine so there's that data point)
I know you said you can't have any fake milks, but it could add some interest to your rice porridge drink perhaps!

For me, the problem there is the food intolerances. The premade stuff rarely plays nicely with them. I DO have some stuff in the freezer though and I have a couple easy soups I need to make this week, so all is not lost.
my uncle really loved tofu. so versatile! so many varieties! he had a massive number of food intolerances/allergies at that time, but he could eat tofu & was so happy to have so many good ways to eat it. i wanted to be there as he cooked it in all the ways he described.
Call your local food pantries and see what they need.
They get requests for people with food intolerances and allergies that can be difficult to shoulder.
Also, hygeine and period products are always needed.
The best bet is cash, though. Then they can just get what's needed.
Homemade gluten free waffles with cranberry “sauce” on top. Why, yes I am proud of myself for coming up with this amazing meal that works for my long covid food intolerances.
Gotta say, I really don't enjoy holiday gatherings very much, if at all. I've never been part of a friends or family group that remembered or accommodated my food intolerances, so they rarely have food I can eat, esp. before driving.
the holiday isnt helping my depression and loneliness if you cant tell. its never been one ive cared that much to celebrate and my family always made it miserable (no consideration of my lifelong food intolerances, increasingly hateful sentiments, making fun of my food intolerances. etc)
I´ve been veggie since 1985 yet, when I was 14, about 20 years ago I got some food intolerances, since then I´ve been lacto-veggie, I can´t digest eggs anymore, I got intestine cramps and diarrhea from them, as well as from lactose, fructose, yeast and fermented vegetables...
1/2 I know. It's a terrible joke. But there's a serious side to this.
Perimenopause can sometimes bring bowel issues. Our hormones can speed up the transition of food through the gut - or slow it down. We're a little more inclined to allergies - which can include food intolerances.
Thanks. She just realized she's lactose intolerant and has Celiac, I have the red meat allergy and a bunch of other food intolerances. The foods we can both eat don't cross over much. Eating together is certainly an adventure.
That´s really weird, but I can relate, I have several food intolerances, also am I chronic underweight from the Lupus and the Scleroderma, which many people often don´t believe me, but it´s the truth, I´ve been underweight since the Lupus broke out in 1992 yet, but wasn´t diagnosed before 2002...
“Girl dinner”
The cheese and Toast Chee crackers and yoggies are from home; the salad, roll, brownie, and ginger ale are the parts I can eat without setting off my food intolerances
Oh man, I forgot about puking in the café in Ulaanbaatar, and puking in the coastal train in Vietnam…
I had undiagnosed food intolerances for several months. I was throwing up a lot for a while.
my first instinct was fresh-faced young chef white lotus binghe, and i still love that! in this version, he goes back to tyrant emperor Shen Yuan, noted gourmand, who secretly has food intolerances which no one knows until the mysterious witch/spirit starts cooking for him
I didn’t diet. I had unrecognized food intolerances. Ironically, I received a lot of hate for being skinny. It seems the culture just wants to punish; too skinny, too fat. Never enough for perfection.
Yeah I was completely under the impression soaking the beans was all that was needed and now some things make sense.
I don't really have any food intolerances (if you exclude butter) so I'm hoping if I can cook things right I won't be uncomfortable. I was given SO many lentils
“nobody had food intolerances in the 80s” - bud, they made us eat carob in the third grade and they put nutritional yeast on our popcorn, don’t piss on me and tell me it’s raining
The consquences of #ME, such as disturbed sleep patterns and food intolerances, as well as gastrointestinal symptoms can make it difficult to follow conventional healthy eating patterns, meal composition, and meal times.

Thanks for sharing about your experience. I've struggled with new inexplicable food intolerances the last few years (especially when the stressors pile up) and it's nice to hear something hopeful. Your point about the isolation is particularly poignant. I miss sharing food with others worry-free.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the spike in illnesses that have food intolerances.
I wonder if, just maybe, that has anything to do with the virus that shall not be named that has fucked basically all of my friends' stomachs up (including my own).
Haha isn't it! Gwarr.
We did have a good old chat about how money is ruining football, the Amsterdam public transport system, food intolerances & typing 99 to continue. Absolute gent.
It is weirdly difficult to avoid because so many restaurants cook in beef tallow or the line cooks don't know what oil or it's cooked too close to red meat and gets grease... But I can eat delicious seafood. That sucks too. Food intolerances are so hard to navigate.
I just learned about "muscle testing" for food intolerances and I cant stop yelling NOOOOOO
It's basically the same as putting a ring on a string to see which way it sways over a pregnant belly to sex the baby
Self.co Raises €2.56M to Make Allergy Testing Affordable Across Europe
Allergies and food intolerances affect nearly 40% of the global population, yet access to reliable testing remains limited. Conventional allergy tests are often expensive, slow, and difficult to obtain, with patients paying…
I hope you know you aren’t alone. And grateful you are sharing. So many of us with long covid have gone or are going through a combination of histamine intolerance and mast cell issues affecting food intolerances. I was down to about 5-10 foods I could eat for a few years myself.
Yup, food intolerances and allergies can be triggered by many different viral infections. Covid just seems particularly severe with it (not sure if there are studies comparing). But yeah, for me the flu and some others were enough to eliminate things like potatoes from my diet :(
Yup, I lot of my, many, food intolerances came post viral infections! It really sucks and I wouldn't wish it on anyone - you're spot on that protecting yourself is the way to go!
My husband had significant food intolerances after covid. Eating a low histamine diet for about year, he finally healed back to mostly normal. SIGHI was the only source I could find that explained histamine in food in a way that made sense to me.
www.mastzellaktivierung.info/downloads/fo...
My head,I knew it had to do with food because of food intolerances previously I deliberately made/ate the same sandwich a couple of days later and yes it happened again, it was the sliced processed cheese in those plastic wrappers that had caused it!Never ate it since never happened since!
#SecretSantaAoNZ I have a bunch of food intolerances. Basically I’m sensitive to high histimine foods. It’s taken me ages to figure out what I can and can’t have, so please steer clear of food gifts. www.bbcgoodfood.com/health/healt...
Changing my diet & going back on ADHD meds has improved my life dramatically but it does lead to very specific conundrums like ‘I took my Ritalin & forgot to eat & now I’m out in the world with the stimulant jitters and hundreds of food intolerances trying to find something I can eat’
I didn't really have allergies or food intolerances until they cropped up in the last five years. Want me to lose my voice? Just give me a package of these.
#allergies #rye #laryngitis
Whether you’re living with food allergies, supporting a loved one, or simply want to learn more about managing food intolerances and allergies—this session is for you.
My parents have agreed to help. I’m currently on medical leave, though my partner is working. Our three kids have restrictive eating patterns & I have multiple food intolerances (gluten, fish, several fruits & veg), so it’s hard for us to get food we can eat. So thankful my parents offered to help.
fwiw: doctors are basically glorified mechanics. some of them know how the engines work, others just know how to follow the manual.
doctors often know little to nothing about, for example, food intolerances, or immunity.
immunity can and does wane for all kinds of reasons.
—isn't showing any other symptoms of it. I just want my boy to feel better and be able to eat! He has a lot of food intolerances and I am worried he is getting more and more and it is always a guessing game when he does. We know he is sensitive to chicken based kibble
[Food insecurity, food intolerances]
For example, this post is about food intolerances and restricted eating and accidental malnutrition
But is also applicable to restricted eating due to, say, SNAP cuts
[Food insecurity]
Most of my experience/writing on nutrient deficiencies is focused on disability:
- food intolerances or sensory issues
- lack of access to fresh food
- lack of energy for cooking
Which is potentially relevant to a lot of folks rn (unfortunately)
Sorry to hear that! I really feel it for people with allergies and food intolerances because it does make it harder. People who are allergic to nuts, or soy, or gluten have it tough! It's a matter of finding what foods and what methods of preparation work for you. Plus, raising awareness is key!!
I can't help but think about folks with food intolerances. Buying gluten free or dairy free because they -really do have to- is already so expensive. I have to assume folks go without when the prices skyrocket, but the effects to their health...
All autistics have what we call food intolerances - we don't feed a cat rice - we don't feed ourselves poisons. Chances are that our immune systems being triggered in pregnancy sends autistic fetuses into trauma causing autistics to have disabilities.
Now I will go from food insecurity to full-on, hunger malnutrition & even worse health as someone who’s already high risk due to bariatric surgery history, chronic illnesses, food intolerances & poverty. I don’t know how many more ways to describe just how bad things are for me and
Recurring gastritis may be caused by hidden food intolerances. A simple food intolerance test in Dubai can help identify the foods triggering your symptoms and restore digestive comfort. To know more details visit: www.fml-dubai.com/food-intoler...
And often, food banks aren't able to accommodate us. They often pre-box food so you simply grab a box, but people with food intolerances or allergies can't eat that way.
Yes please! Both me and my partner are gf for medical reasons. We got a good delivery from a pantry and almost everything was gluten full. They don’t take requests for food intolerances
yeah as someone with a number of food intolerances and one outright allergy, I wouldn't wanna roll up there on some random day and find out there's nothing I can safely eat.
I guess my niche ethical stance is if you don't take people's allergies and food intolerances seriously because you think they're "faking it" you don't get to be a chef.
I have weird food intolerances.
No wonder it took me SO LONG to get my diet under control.
I'm allergic to milk - as well as lactose intolerant.
I'm intolerant to some carbs containing gluten, not the gluten itself.
I'm allergic to mammals
AND
I'm sensitive to caffeine
wtf
Sad to see this and other branches close. I’ve got food intolerances and so it’s one of the few food businesses I both like and can go to. I’ve been to the Marina branch several times for my birthdays with my family. My best wishes for the future to all the staff.
In 2 weeks I’ll no longer have SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown, meaning I’ll have no food beyond whatever I can brave the lines at the food pantry and scavenge for there, never mind that I have food intolerances, need higher amounts of protein due to GI surgery and can’t function
Or they think you can just show up to a food bank at a church but that is a time investment where you wait in line for 2-3 hours for your turn and don’t get a choice of what foods you are given. What if have food intolerances or allergies?
to me "people feeling excluded is sad" or vague references to "I discovered I/my kid/my friend had many food intolerances and that is sad" are not statements that give me confidence about your understanding of what is required for foods to be celiac safe.
You might want to try an elimination diet to suss out food intolerances. A few friends of mine have discovered they have issues with fructose and fructans (FODMAP), meaning they have issues with onions, garlic, and high-fructose corn syrup.
Like the social darwinism scripts that frame having food intolerances as "weakness" or something that is new (due to GMOs , not breast feeding or whatever else they want to scapegoat).
When it's like the only reason ppl weren't aware back then is cuz it wasn't all readily accessible.
ofc, food intolerances are the worst and trying to eat around them can be miserable. I hope you are able to get tested quickly and get it all figured out. It took us a while and i hope it doesn't take you nearly that long.
Really suffering from GI issues here in the US, and I don’t know if it’s just me or due to how the food is processed. But I have developed such a long list of food intolerances. To say it’s affecting my quality of life is an understatement. I didn’t sleep for almost a year before I figured it out.
The more I learn about celiac, MCAS, food intolerances, and even how first-gen antihistamines can affect your brain long-term, the more positive I am that people aren’t as mad as they think, they’re actually just way sicker than they thought.
I started my biologic to help with my food intolerances, incredible itching and other MCAS symptoms. P is taking excellent care of me. “So, what are your side effects or symptoms now?” Still feeling sea sick on land little dude.
I don't fly.
I have been working to reduce my meat intake (I generally eat an ovo-veg breakfast, vegan lunch, and omnivore dinner).
It can be very, very hard to eliminate meat when you have complex medical issues or food intolerances (as I do), but I'm working to reduce my footprint.
