Abstract Synopsis

  • This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the impact of vigorous intensity exercise during the third trimester of pregnancy on maternal and infant outcomes, using data from multiple types of studies including randomized trials and cohort studies.
  • Results showed no significant differences in key infant measures such as birthweight, risk of being small for gestational age, or low birth weight, nor in maternal weight gain, suggesting that vigorous exercise does not adversely affect these outcomes.
  • However, women who engaged in vigorous exercise experienced slightly longer pregnancies and a reduced risk of preterm birth, indicating potential benefits of vigorous activity during late pregnancy.
