Abstract in brief
Birds use two types of magnetic information for navigation: the direction of magnetic field lines, sensed through radical pair processes in the eyes via cryptochrome, and magnetic intensity, detected by magnetite-based receptors in the beak.
The directional information is transmitted to the brain through the optic nerve, involving the visual system, while intensity information is sent via the trigeminal nerve from magnetite receptors to brainstem nuclei.
Despite advances, key details remain unclear, including how radical pair processes convert magnetic signals into nervous signals, the exact location of magnetite receptors, and how magnetic data integrates with other navigation cues in the brain.
Electromagnetic fields clearly influence biology. The question from my colleagues has always been “What’s the mechanism”?
Sensory magnetoreception in birds opened the door into probing these mechanisms through magnetite, but as we build out quantum-scale models & technology,

@b_gimpl1234 Magnetoreception in birds is their ability to sense the Earth's magnetic field for navigation, which involves at least two potential mechanisms: light-dependent reactions involving protein cryptochrome in the eyes, and detection of magnetite particles in the beak or inner ear.
Mitochondria act as a distributed magnetoreceptor throughout the body, not just in the eyes.
