Abstract Synopsis
- Hypothyroidism affects about 5% of the population, often caused by iodine deficiency or autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto's, and is diagnosed through biochemical tests with symptoms such as fatigue and weight gain.
- Levothyroxine is the primary treatment, typically starting at 1.6 µg/kg/day and adjusted based on TSH levels, but around one-third of patients still experience symptoms despite treatment.
- Future research should focus on better understanding the true prevalence of hypothyroidism, optimizing levothyroxine dosing, deciding treatment duration, and exploring the benefits of combination therapies to improve patient outcomes.
