The overall tone emphasizes the importance of recognizing fish pain for animal welfare and scientific understanding, suggesting substantial impact on perspectives and policies.
Abstract in brief
Fish have the ability to detect harmful stimuli through nociceptive mechanisms, which are essential for their survival and avoiding injury.
Research shows that the biological and behavioral responses to pain in fish are very similar to those in mammals, indicating an evolutionary conservation of pain mechanisms.
Behavioral changes in fish, such as reduced activity and abnormal movements after potentially painful events, suggest that fish likely experience pain, and these responses are affected by pain-relieving drugs.

This is one of a few good studies suggesting fish do feel pain. At least from what I've seen, studies trying to suggest the opposite only say why our idea that they feel pain may be wrong, rather than proving that they're right.
@BeardedHeretic_ @philipmuller @RenTheAngelic @answersinreason so it would appear that fish do show behavioural modification due to pain stimuli and the fact that the behaviour is reversed by pain relieving medication suggests some fish do indeed feel conscious pain and not just nociception
