Abstract Synopsis
- This study in Malaysia examined how starting to use kratom affected illicit drug use and HIV risk behaviors among 260 male drug users, finding that kratom initiation was linked to reductions in heroin, methamphetamine, and amphetamine use.
- Additionally, initiating kratom use was associated with a significant decrease in risky HIV behaviors, such as engaging in sex with sex workers, drug use before sex, injecting drugs, sharing injection equipment, and injecting with other drug users.
- Overall, the results suggest that kratom might play a role in reducing both the use of certain illicit drugs and risky behaviors that could lead to HIV transmission in this population.]
