The discussions strongly emphasize that while cognitive ability predicts academic success, noncognitive traits such as grit, resilience, and self-control are crucial for long-term success, supported by references to specific studies and real-world examples like military training outcomes. The tone reflects both appreciation and curiosity, exploring how these traits can be better measured and fostered, illustrating a deep engagement with the research and its implications.
AgreementStrong agreement

InterestHigh interest
Participants display high curiosity about topics like grit, resilience, and noncognitive skills, indicating deep engagement with the subject matter.
EngagementHigh engagement
Many expressions include references to specific studies, data, and implications for training and education, implying thorough analysis and deep reflection.
ImpactHigh impact
The discussions highlight the importance of integrating noncognitive traits into selection processes and educational strategies, emphasizing broad societal and practical relevance.
Abstract in brief
Cognitive ability is the strongest predictor of academic and military grades, but noncognitive traits like grit and other personal attributes play a more significant role in predicting overall success, such as completing training and graduating.
Prior to training, cognitive skills were negatively associated with physical ability and grit, highlighting the complex relationship between different personal attributes.
The study emphasizes that noncognitive qualities are crucial for real-world success and should be given more focus in research and practical applications for predicting achievement.]

Among 10,000 US military cadets, cognitive ability emerged as the strongest predictor of academic & military grades.
However, noncognitive attributes (e.g. grit) were better able at predicting successful completion of initiation training & 4-y graduation

@SashaGusevPosts EA squeaked past IQ sensitivities & is very tractable. I wish there was more research on traits like skill, success, & learning. Of those, learning disabilities seems the most active - but knowledge of the full biology of these can benefit society (eg, https://t.co/kYAKaJZmek).

@ele_giest @AdamLowisz @elonmusk I said it’s not the only predictor of success/aptitude. Why you sorry? Also, grit, self control, EQ, parental education, socioeconomic status and many others are good predictors of success. Up to a point IQ for sure helps.
Here is a neat example:
